In his report of the operations of the Wellington Fire Brigade from January 1, 1926, to December 31, 1926. the superintendent states that the calls received totalled 429, which was the highest recorded for the past 10 years. Notwithstanding, the increase’ in the number of calls it was pleasing to note that the city escaped any serious conflagration. Two notable fires occurred during the year, that of the Dominion Mptors (Ltd.) and at 'Louis Salek’s premises, where the damage in each fire exceeded £lO,OOO. The estimated value of the property on which fires occurred was £1,151,524. The insurance on the property on which fires occurred was £777,584, and the estimated loss covered by insurance £78,726. The total estimated loss for the year was £78,726.
