AUCKLAND, January 11. In the Auckland championships to-night Miss Gladys Pidgcon lowered the Australian and New Zealand 220 yards ladies’ breast-stroke record from 3min 40sec to 3min 35 3-ssec. The previous record was ■hared by Misses Pidgeon and Ettie Robertson, of Sydney. In the 100 Yards Intermediate Girls’ Championship, Miss Doris Magee lowered by two-fifths of a second the Dominion record of 69 l-ssec, held by Miss M. Farquhar. Miss Ena Stockley won the 100 yards ladies’ event in 68sec, after, a great race with Miss Farquhar. A.’ D. Adamson was first in the 100 yards men’s event from J. Errwright and L. Fairgrav (dead heat). Time. 59 2-ssec. A. E. Baird won the 220 yards men’s race in 2min 40sec with ease. January 13. The Auckland swimming championships were concluded this evening. Gordon Bridson lowered his own intermediate boys’ 440 yards New Zealand record by seven seconds to smin 40 see. Baird retained his 440 yards men’s title by winning comfortably from Enwright in smin 47sec. Miss riri. Page. Dominion champion, lost her 440 yards title to Miss Jean Bell, whose time was 6min 20 3-ssec. TWO RECORDS BROKEN. CHRISTCHURCH, January J 3. At the Canterbury Centre swimming championships to-night, Miss D. Breward won the 220 yards ladies’ breast stroke and lowered the' time by 18 2-ssec. D. P. Lindsay lowered the record for the 880 yards event. Both swimmers established fresh provincial records. NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. THE OTAGO REPRESENTATIVES. Four members of the team which will represent Otago at the forthcoming New Zealand sinimtning championships at Auckland —Mr R. Calder, Miss K. Miller, and Masters D. and L. Olds, accompanied by Messrs B. Haig (manager) and J. M'lndoe (delegate to the New Zealand Swimming Conference) —-left for the north yesterday morning. Miss M. Jepson went north on Saturday morning, and Mr C. Lewis, who was, owing to pressure of business, unable to travel with the rest of the team, will leave on Thursday next.. Mesdames Miller and Jepson will accompany the team as official chaperones. FAREWELL BY MR E. H. OLDS. As an official farewell to the Dunedin publics Mr E. H. Olds (who has lately resigned his position of custodian of the Municipal Baths) and his family staged a demonstration of swimming, followed by a lantern show, in the swimming baths on Tuesday. There were also three junior races —two for girls,-won by Clarice Lang and F. Lang respectively, and one for boys, won by W. Jarvis. The attendance was fairly good, and the evening passed pleasantly and smoothly. Mr Olds himself gave an exhibition of fancy swimming, Leslie Olds a demonstration of the crawl stroke, and Doug. Olds a demonstration of all-round swimming. Nancy, aged eight, also displayed her prowess in the water. The lantern pictures consisted of views of buildings and swimming pools in the United States, and surf riding scenes in

Honolulu. At the conclusion of the entertainment, Mr Fred Foster started the singin; of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow,” those present joining in lustily, after which Mr Olds expressed his thanks. Many of the visitors took the opportunity as they left of wishing Mr Olds and his family every good fortune in his new sphere of life.

NEW SOUTH WALES CHAMPIONSHIPS.

SYDNEY, January 15. The New South Wales swimming championships resulted as follows:— 100 Yards Backstroke. —Saito (Japan) 1, Campbell 2, Kirkland 3. Won by two yards. Time, Imin 13sec. 220 Yards. —Takaishi 1, Charlton 2, Moore 3. Won by eight yards. Time, 2min 17sec. Takaishi won impressively, showing he is in a class above Charlton over the 220 yards. The winner’s time is 6 4-ssec .faster than the Australian record, and only 1 2-ssec outside the world’s record.

High Diving Championship.—Bassass I. Tight 2. Coyle 3. '220 Yards Breast-stroke Championship.— Bayldon 1, O'Connor 2, M'Cure 3. Won by two yards. Time, 3min 15 4-ssec. HOCKEY. INVITATION FROM AUSTRALIA. CHRISTCHURCH,' January 15. The Australian Hockey Association has issued an invitation to the New Zealand Hockey Association to send a team- to tour Australia in August- The programme includes matches at Sydney, Goulburn, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Adelaide. PROPOSED EMPIRE TOURNAMENT. LONDON, January. 11. A conference is shortly to be held in London of Empire Women’s Hockey Association with the object of forming an AllEmpire tournament in 1928. including England, Ireland Scotland, Wales, South Africa. Australia, and New Zealand. It mav be played in South Africa, which is an ideal-half-way venue.—Sydney Sun Cable. GOLF. ATTACK ON AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS. LONDON, January 12. The year’s new event in golfing history will be an organised attack on the American championships. Golf Illustrated is raising at least £3OOO for a national fund to finance a tour of at le;.st 10 professionals, who, in addition to playing in the championships, will meet an American professional team for the Ryder Cup. Several'hundreds of pounds have already been subscribed. ROWING. BARRY TO MEET GOODSELL. LONDON, January 12. The Sporting Life has opened a fund to defray the expenses of Bert Barry to visit Australia to row Goodsell for the world’s title on the Paramatta River in 'June next, for which Barry is issuing a challenge. WHANGAREI, January 14. A communication has been received here from P. J. Hannan to the effect that arrangements for his trip to the United States to contest the world’s sculling championship ’with Goodsell are well in hand. Hannan expects to sail in March next. EIGHT-OARED BOATS FOR OTAGO. The two eight-oared boats for the Otago Rowing Association, which are now on the Remuera, will be delivered at Port Chalmers to-day. One will be used by the Fort clubs and the other one will be brought to Dunedin for the Dunedin clubs, ft is worth noting that the last eightoared contest in Otago Harbour was rowed in, 1898 at the New Zealand championship regatta.
