A BURGLAR’S ESCAPE.
AUCKLAND. July 17. A burglar experienced a narrow escape from being captured on Friday evening while inside the premises of Messrs R. J. and J. O. Sims after he had fired a charge of gelignite in an attempt to blow open the safe. About 20 minutes past eight, a tramway motrorman, who was driving a city bound car past the premises of Messrs Sims, heard a loud explosion, and, on arrival at the intersection of Customs and Queen streets, immediately informed Constables Ross and Watts of the unusual happening. Both constables hurried round and found that one of the doors, which was open, bore the marks of a jemmy. Each constable watched a door and later went inside to search for the man, whom they heard moving about inside. However, the burglar made a quick exit unnoticed through another door. A subsequent investigation showed that the first snot fired had no effect on the safe. Another charge was found packed into the keyhole with a fuse attached and ready for firing. _
