PORT KEMBLA ASHORE.
ON SAN SALVADOR ISLAND. Advice received by Messrs J. W. Swift and Co. from the Wellington office of the Commonwealth a*-d Dominion Line states that the Port Kembla is ashore on San Salvador Island, north of Cuba. The Port Kembla left London on June 20 laden with general cargo # for Dunedin and Lyttelton. She called at Norfolk (Virginia) to replenish her bunkers, and resumed her voyage on July 6. San Salvador Island is in the direct course of vessels bound from Norfolk to the Panama Canal. A course is set by masters to take their vessels clear of the northern end of the island. The Port Kembla, which has visited Dunedin, is a twin-screw steel steamer of 8435 tons gross. She is of the cruiser stern type, and was built bv Messrs Hawthorn, Leslie, and Co. (Ltd.) at New-castle-on-Tyne in 1920, being launched in July of that year. She is one of the latest steam-propelling units of the Commonwealth and Dominion Line. Her length is 481 ft 2in, breadth 62ft 3in, and depth 33ft. The Port Kembla was expected to arrive at Dunedin about July 31. Further advice received by the local agents states that the vessel is making a fair amount of water in No. 2 hold, and that coal is being jettisoned as a pro liminary to an attempt to refloat the vessel.
