A WHITE AUSTRALIA
LABOUR ATTACK ON POLICY. LONDON, June 22. A dead set against the White Australia policy was alleged by Messrs Evatt and Kitson, representing Australia, at the World Labour Migration Congress, which opened to-day, in which only five Englishspeaking countries —Britain, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Africa—are represented, European and Asiatic countries (including India, whose representatives are all Indians). Mr W. Wilson represents New Zealand. The LTnited States i not repreented. The British delegates included Mr Ramsay Mac Donald, Mr A. Henderson, Mr J. Lansbury and C. T. Cramp. Mr Evatt illustrated a deliberate attack on a White Australia by quoting the Independent Labour Party’s proposal sponsored by Mr F. W. jowett, that “emigrants should not be excluded purely on the grounds of race or colour.” Mr Evatt declared that other proposals, emanating from other European and Asiatic bodies implicitly, if not, explicitly, betrayed a similar hostility to the White Australia ideal. Messrs Evatt and Kitson are determined to fight these proposals to the last ditch and also other similar proposals by Europeans, designed to create an international authority to override national organisations such as dominions’ trades and labour bodies. REFERENDA PILL PASSED. MELBOURNE, June 25. The Senate passed the Referenda Bill. STATE INSURANCE OFFICE. SYDNEY, June 25 The Government Insurance Office is advertising for business under the Workers’ Compensation Act. It will charge rates on the Iwsis of those declared by the underwriters.
