RAILWAY CONTRACTS.
CONDITIONS UNFAIR. DOMINION BUILDERS PREJUDICED. CHRISTCHURCH, June 2. In a Railways Department advertisement it is stated that separate tenders for either the new locomotive works at Hillisde or the new car and wagon shops at Addington will not be considered. This was discusser by a meeting of the Canterbury Master Builders’ Association, when a telegram wai read from the Dunedin Master Builders’ Association stating that the Dunedin builders, supported bv the Dominion Ironmasters, protested strongly against the conditions for railway buildings at Dunedin and Christchurch, as it was considered that tlu exclusion of separate tenders for Dunedin and Christchurch would prejudice Dominion contractors. The telegram further stated that the Government’s action was not consistent with its professed preparations to avoid uncmployme as the conditions advertised favoured foreign competitors. If the Christchurch contractors were prepared ii /as asked if the Canterbury Association would join in a protest, if necessary, by sending a combined'deputation to Wellington. It was decided to refer the question to a special committee to inspect the plans and to reply to the Dunedin Association.
