CENSUS RETURNS.

THE LATEST FIGURES. WELLINGTON, June 2. From the preliminary total of the census returns it is made quite evident that the trend of the population movement is northward. The returns so far to hand show the total population of the Dominion to be 1,227,000, the increase over the figures for 1921 census being 126,500. “A report furnished to me this morning by the Government Statistician,” said the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon. R. F. Bollard), “shows that the majority of tbe census results are now to hand, and while a complete survey is not yet possible, the general trend of the population movement is evident. The returns which have so far come to hand show the total population of New Zealand to be 1,227,000 for the areas completed. These areas in 1921 had a population of I, The increase so far noted is therefore 126,500, which is equivalent to 11. per cent.” Mr Bollard said that, from the figures placed before him by the Government Statistician, the population of New Zealand was still moving northward. “Out of the gain of 126,500 credited at this stage,” he remarked, “the North Island has 87,800. All the provincial districts show increased populations, the largest absolute gains occurring in Auckland district (51,600) and in the Wellington district (27,600). The continuation of the urban drift is still being manifested. The total gain recorded for the completed cities, boroughs, and independent town districts (105,800) considerably outweighs that for the country and lesser town districts (20,700).” The latest returns available are as follows, the 1921 figures being given in parentheses:— . Hastings borough, 10,090 (9115), increase 975; Egmont county, 3023 (1724), increase 229. (Note. —The above excludes Maoris.) THE FOUR CITIES.
