CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

MEETING OF OTAGO SOCIETY. 4 meeting of the committee of the Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held in Mr E. S. Wilsoij’s board room on Tuesday afternoon. Sir George Fenwick (president) occupied the chair. Others present were: the Rev. W. Saunders, Messrs Crosby Morris, D. Andrew, W. F. Sligo. 8. P. Leith, A. D. Sutherland, and Mrs and Miss Porteous. Mr D. W. Miller. NVaitakaro, Tokomaru Bay, wrote as follows: “1 presume you have teen the picture in the current issue of the Auckland Weekly News showing a live Kahawai with a hook in its back which is used as a bait to catch Bword fish. Surely this is cruelty even according to legal standards and a punishable offence.” The Chairman: Is it any more cruel to put a hook through a fish’s back than to play a salmon with a hook through its gills? Mr Sligo suggested that the North Island people should take up the matter. It was decided to send a copy of the letter to the Auckland Society. It was decided to give £5 towards the “Animal Welfare Week” fund. The secretary of the Timaru branflh wrote stating that he had received a com* n* infc similar to that which* had come ore the Otago Society regarding the treatment of a boundary dog tied at the junction of the Hawera and Luggate roads.

He had written to Mr G. Gould, of Christ* church, who said that the dog was tethered with a heavy chain cable “such as might be more suitably employed as a tow lino for a steam tug. ’ It was thought that the Timaru letter re* ferred to the case which had previously come before the Otago Society. Mr Sligo said the society should giv® special attention to boundary dogs and should find out where every boundary dog was and if it were being properly treated. It was decided to ascertain wfiere boun* dary dogs were stationed. The Inspector reported that during th*l f month he had cautioned > three person** two for driving horses in poor condition and one for over-stocking sheep ta saleyards.
