A meeting of about 1000 persons was held In Lower llutt to protest against the actio .i of the local Borough Council in dismissing Mr J. R- Barnes (the borough engineer). After hearing Mr Barnes’s reply to charges made against him resolutions were passed challenging the Mayor to resign or contest a bye-clectioi on the question, and directing the new mayor, if elected, to reinstate Mr Barnes at the same salary (£500) In lieu of the £BOO it wus propose! to pay a new engineer.
