CHINESE AND KANAKAS.

CLASH AT OCEAN ISLAND. AUCKLAND, December 3. Mr Ellis, the New Zealand representative of the British Phosphates Company, has received a further cablegram that tho clash between the Chinese and the kanakas at Ocean Island was more serious than was at first apparent. It is stated that the Chinese smuggled a quantity of arms ashore, as the result of which 10 kanakas were wounded. It is not stated what the extent of the injuries were. An offer of help from tho British ship Penrlmoor was declined. An offer was also made to send eight of the armed constabulary from Nauru Island, but it is not stated with what results. The Laburnum left for Ocean Island this morning.
