There has been a lack of activity in stock this week, though a ready market exists for good young ewes at prices well sustained, notwithstanding the slump in wool. At the weekly market the offering of sheep was comparatively small, this being probably due to the heavy rain of the day before. There was also a small attendance of buyers, but prices shewed little decline in any direction, the range being as follows:—Prime fat lambs, 38s to 39s 6d; medium lambs, 35s Gd to 37s 6d; light lambs, 25s 9d to 31s 6d; fat wethers, 31s to 37s 6d; prime fat ewes, 27s 3d to 23s 6d; medium ewes, 24s 6d to 26s 6d; light ewes, 21s 6d to 23s 6d; two-tooth crossbred wethers, 28s 9d; six and eight-tooth halfbred wethers, 265; mixed-sex lambs, 26s 6d to 30s 2d; small halfbred lambs, 25s 6d; aged ewes, 19s 6d to 25s 9d; inferior ewes, 16s to 18s 6d. Transactions by private treaty have been on a limited scale, and the greater part of it has been in breeding ewes, the sales including several lines of two-tcoth ewe 3, being 41s, 435, 455, and 45s 6d, according to quality and location. Other sales have been as follows:—Mixed six and eight-tooth ewes of good quality, 41s; failing-mouthed ewes, from 17s to 21s. forward lambs, 28s; forward wethers, 345; failing-mouthed wethers, 19s; fat wethers, from 41s to 465, according to weight and quality; fat ewes, 28s. Before the drop of a halfpenny a pound came on Thursday a good number of fat lambs were sold for freezing purposes on the per lb basis. Not a single animal appeared in the cattle pens at the. weekly sale, and transactions by private treaty have been limited in numbers both ways. The prices reported are as follows:—Light-weight fat bullocks, £9; fat steers, £9 to £ll, according to weight and finish; station store steers in forward condition, £8 5s and £9; forward store heifers, £6; two-year-old £4 12s 6d; 18-month-old heifers, £1 10s; store cows, £1 to £1 10s; calves, 10s. Tho only dairy stock for which there is any demand are young cows just at the drop, and these have been sold at from £6 to f>B. Other dairy cows have changed hands at £4 10s, and aged cows at profit lave been disposed of at from £1 10s to £2 10s. SOUTHLAND MARKET REPORT. (From Our Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, May 9. The National Dairy Association has, in view of the continued low price" for New Zealand butler on the Home market, circularised dairy companies in the following terms:—We undei-stand many companies have instructed their London agents not to 6tll consignments under a fixed price. Other companies are withholding their butter from shipment at this end pending an improvement in the market, but as the season is now drawing to a close, the question in the minds of many must be "When is the market going to show an improvement and to such an extent as to allow held quantities to be either sold or shipped.” The present unsatisfactory state of the market is no new experience to the industry, tho same slump has occurred during the last Beason or two. The cause and its remedy will, no doubt, be one of the main factors the Dairy Produce Control Board will have to grapple with. In the past this periodical slump has been attributed to heavy arrivals, —in ether words, the law of supply and demand. November, December, and January are the three months of the year when oui production is greatest; allowing three months for the produce to reach Great Britain brings us to February, March, and April of each year, the period during recent years when low prices have been obtained. It is therefore only natural to assume that excessive arrivals, greater than the demand, weaken the market, and not until supplies commence to diminish can be expect prices to improve. At April 30 there were 366,720 boxes of New Zealand Gutter afloat, that is in. steamers that had actually sailed finally from the dominion, but had not arrived at London. Eestimated in store awaiting shipment and loaded in steamers that had yet to sail, 294.000 boxes, but a considerable quantity estimated at 65,000 boxes is meantime withheld from shipment. Perhapß 25 per cent, of this held quantity may not find its way to the Home market.
