NEW PACIFIC CABLE.
TENDERS ACCEPTED FOR DUPLICATION. WELLINGTON, May 5. The Government has received advice that tenders have been accepted for the duplication of the Pacific cable from Canada to Fiji by September of next year. The Fanning Island section (Bamfield, Vancouver, to Fanning Island. 3458 nautical miles) will be laid by the Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company, and the Fanning Island to Fiji sections - (2043 nautical miles) by the Siemans Company. Owing to the greater price of metals the cost is expected to be nearly £1,000,000 more is expected to be nearly £1,000,000 more than the original cable, but the board has over £2.000,000 in hand. The date for the completion of both duplications is fixed for September, 1926.
