THE CONSTABLE WINS.
WELLINGTON, August 2. The police have lately been searching for a man alleged to be concerned in altering a one-pound note to a 20-pound note. A constable came across a man in the Clyde Quay Hotel bar whose appearance agreed with that of the wanted man. He was having a drink at the moment, and when the constable quietly told him bis presence at the police station was desired the man seemed willing enough to go along, hut asked to be allowed to finish his drink. Instead of doing this he dashed out _of the door and ; closely followed by the policeman, went in and out of several nearby streets at a rapid pace. A crowd gathered to watch the race. The fugitive dashed through them, thus gaining on his pursuer. The latter, however, jumped on a motor lorry and made up some of the lost ground. Eventually he came upon his man in private premise* in a street a little distance from the start of the chase, and arrested him. The man gave the name of Harrison. He will appear in court to-day.
