AUCKLAND TOPICS.

The opening day of the combined meeting held by the Franklin and Matamata Clubs at Ellerslie, attracted a fair attendance for an off day. The weather was fine, but the going was heavy. Speculation was fairly brisk, the totalisator handling £28.882 during the day. Racing commenced with the Bombay Hurdle Race, Flowing Bowl being a warm fancy. The public began badly as the favourite was never sighted. As usual, Daloopil was early in the lead and made the running to three furlongs from home, where Thiganlhu took charge, running home an easy winner from Glenotus with Hokemai a neck away third. A big field of twenty-five lined up in (he Hinuera Handicap, Rafa being backed down to a fairly short price. When they settled down Ladv Merriwee was the leader with Just Quietly. Rafa and Praiseworthy handy, the field being well strung out before they had gone far. Lady Merriwee showed, tile '.ray into the straight, hut the distance the favourite took charge, •H’jring an easy win by two and a-half f*ng!bs from Praiseworthy, who defeated King Pellieule a head for second place. The winner is fairly smart and likely to be seen to advantage in much better company. The Waiukti Handicap attracted a field of eleven sprinters, Pavo. who lxad the steadier of 11.12, receiving most support, From a good start. King Quinn was first to show- out and piloted the field into the straight- where Nocturne, Jolly Princess and Viyella challenged, the former winning nicely by two and a-bulf lengths from Jolly Princess, with Viyella a neck away third. This was Nocturne’s initial victory in open company, and by the easy manner in which she won, appears to lie at home in that class. A field of eleven faced the starter in the principal event, (he Franklin Handicap, Illumination winding up favourite. Illumination was first to show out and led down the back, with Arch Laddie. Poteen and Bedford liis nearest attendants. The favourite was still in front coming into the straight, but at the distance Arch Laddie headed him only to he challenged by Royal Box, who looked like winning when Gien Canny came along with a great run, getting up in time to divide the stake with Royal Box. Arch Laddie was third a head further back. A lot of interest was centred in the performance of Royal Box. The son of Na3S.au will probably be shipped to Sydney next week, his stablemates Tarleton and Witness Box accompanying him. Waikawa counted most admirers in the field of eight that, came out in tho steeplechase. When the barrier lifted the favourite was slow bo move, losing a lot of

ground. Irish Errand was tlio early leader, but coming to the double, Hokemai took charge and was never seriously troubled afterwards, winning by four lengths from Rafferty. Kopaka being six lengths away third. Going over the hill the last time Irish Errand came to grief at the first fence, his rider, E. Warner, receiving severe injuries to his shoulder. Pretivman was a warm fancy in (he Lockerbie Handicap, and getting to the front early, looked like leading all the way, but Irish Jig came along with a fine run in the straight and, quickly settling the favourite, won easily by three lengths. The day’s sport ended with the Kiwitahi Welter, Bute Sound being the popular fancy. When the barrier lifted Archie was first away and went out to make the running with Gold Jacket and the favourite handy. Archie showed the way into the straight, hut failed t-o stall off Bute Sound and Bitholia in the run home, tiie favourite winning by three parts of a length, with Archie half a length away third. Tiie local horseman, J. O’Shea, was verysuccessful during the day. riding three winners and a dead heat for first, place. RACING (N NEW ZEALAND SOUTH CANTERBURY HUNT CLUB, meeting was' got off on the 21st, in fine weather, but rain, which set in during the morning, probably had a deterrent effect on the attendance, which was only fairly good. The track was heavy, but- not so bad as what might have been expected after the recent, bad weather. Silk Rein outclassed the field in the Hadlow Hurdles, and won comfortably after waiting until well over the last jump. Phil May’s rider handed away the Hunters’ Steeplechase, and must have won but for covering a lot, of ground in turning into the straight and finally taking matters too easily. Omahu had a good working and successful gallop in the South Canterbury Steeplechase. He pulled up well, and should be greatly benefited by the race. He looked a more robust horse than he did at the last Grand National meeting. Rhoboro, who luckily beat Phil May, came out again and scored a comfortable win in the Teschemaker Memorial, and is quite a good sort of hunter who should do well in his class. Siik Rein was made too much use of in the Hunters’ Plate, and after winning at Iho distance commenced to stop, and Chinatown beat him nicely at the finish. Carmine was a strong order for the Claremont Welter, and had only Fabrinade to beat at the finish of a well-strung-out field. During the day £11.591 10s went through the totalisator as against £14,256 last year. Results : HADLOW HUNTERS’ HURDLES HANDICAP, Of llOsovs. One mile and a-half. I—Mr D.
