The A.R.C. Vvinter meeting concludes on the 6th inst. Since coining to Kllerslie, General Advance has not impressed the track watchers. So far he has not been schooled over the big fences, but his schooling work over hurdles suggests that he will require more experience before being proficient at the game. Great Fun is improving in his work over hurdles. 'l‘he imported horse will receive plenty of attention in his engagements. Oakleigh and Tigerland together gave a line exhibition over a round of the big fences at Kllerslie on Tuesday morning. No doubt the pair are in the front rank of the jumpers in the Dominion. Glenotus has not been in work long, bat has come on very quickly, Early in the season he gave every promise oi turning out useful over the big fences. Khub'ai Khan has been galloping well in his work, and will soon bo back lo his best form. The Australian-bred gelding is a good welter horse. The three-year-old Praiseworthy, who is still eligible to race with the maidens, is showing improved form on the track, and may not be long in getting on the winning list. The local horseman J. Roach had the misfortune to break a linger while riding work last week The mishap may keep him out of the saddle at Kllerslie. Last year Oakleigh accounted for the opposition in the \\ inter Steeplechase, which is decided on the concluding day at Kllerslie. So far, a race extending to three miles over the Kllerslie country appears to suit the St. Amans gelding best. Kohu appears to be a much fitter horse than when he competed at Kllerslie last winter. The Espartero gelding may make amends for past disappointments during the present jumping season. Hendra dees not share too well in his schooling oyer the big fences, and will require u bit more experience. Usually the A.R.C. winter meeting winds U P tn e local racing season, but this vear there will be racing at Kllerslie on July 21 uud 23. Permission has been granted by the Minister of Internal Affairs and the President of the Racing Conference for the Matamata and Franklin Racing Clubs to hold a combined meeting at Kllerslie on the above dates. RACiNC IN NF.W ZEALAND D..J.C, WINTER MEETING. First Day—Saturday, Juke 2. The Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting was opened on Saturday in excellent weather and before a very satisfactory attendance. The sky was overcast when the racing commenced, but the sun shone through the clouds in the afternoon. A slight shower which fell just before the last race was run did not mar the pleasure of the day’s outing. As was only to be expected the track was heavy after the ram which fell on Friday. The racing was of an interesting nature, despite the fact that there were few close finishes. In the Trial Hurdle Handicap A, E. Ellis quickly got Portside lo the front, and the Sarto-Portlire gelding held his place right through. The favourite, Vagabond, did not give a very good display of jumping, and neither did Red Gown. The last-named, however, should act better on a dry ground. Wild Pilgrim fell back three furlongs from home and then came on again. If he had not lost his place he would not have had second position snatched from him by Muzzle, who put in a good run over the last bit. An inquiry was held by the Judicial Committee into a complaint by Mr Hogan, the trainer of Wild Pilgrim, that Burt, on Vagabond, had interfered with his horse between (he three and four furlong posts. After hearing M'Chesnev, the rider of Wild Pilgrim, and Burt, the committee decided that no further action was necessary. The public made no mistake in selecting the probable winner of the Brighton Handicap. Red Wink, the favourite, was always in the leading division, and looked to have the race won at the distance. Then the second favourite, Guncase, came with a good run from some distance back, and got up to win by a neck. The third favourite, Happy Warrior, never got out of Hie ruck. The Birthday Handicap needs little description. Urgency and Bonnetter ran first and second from start to finish, and the rest of the field could not get near them. Bonnie Winkie did not seem able to handle himself in the heavy going. Clean Sweep broke a bone below the fetlock and was pulled up at the end of five furlongs. Pamplona proved too good for the rest of the starters in the Otago Steeplechase. He did not get lo the leader, General Petain, until reaching the water jump, throe furlongs from home, but lie then came on to win easily. General Petain was giving 2st 131 b to the winner, and ran a fine race under the circumstances. He and Pamplona jumped their fences in fine style. Laughing F.yes won the Tradesmen’s Handicap in decisive fashion. The favourite, Will Oakland, was always nicely placed, but was well beaten before the distance was reached. Mythology rail a solid race,
but Martian Miss gave a disappointing display. Francaise also ran vveil. Only four stood up in the St. Clair •Steeplechase. Ihe field was started at (ho new mile post, and they crossed all the obstacles i iarhi round until they readied I the sod wall at the top of the straight. The i wall and the next obstacle — a post and I --Brought trouble to <ix of the starter*, : and Isla Hank led Me.ghera over the. next j mile and won veil at the finish. Fabianiis "'as badly hurt ii is believed he broke his back—ami ho had to fie destroyed. A good favourite in Cerberus went down in the Jumpers’ Flat. Gamecock von very I easily at the finish, and Gladful and Londonderry also ran well. The meeting concluded with the Winter Welter, in which Vice Royal—a hot favour-ite-had a very easy win. Ihe starter, Mr MTvor. had his fields in good line at the start, and he did not waste much time in releasing the barrier once he received the signal that the machine had balanced. 1 winkle was sold to Mr A. 0. Hill before the meeting and ran in the colours of his new owner. The machine handled £27.121 during the day, as compared with £22.138 10s for the corresponding dav last veai. an increase of £4982 10s. He entered his purchase as a Hypatia filly for several races, and ran her in that liame at Epsom before winning at Gatwick. That night the purchaser of the real Hypatia filly telephoned him that she had been shipped abroad. He immediately reported the facts to the racing authorities. May 29.
