'I he Or-*" \l. ' " ' ! represented by Messrs 11. Halliday (president), A. K. .UiM-n. . w ritiiii. u. ... Curtis, A l. W. Wood, and J. L. l»a>smore. The South Canterbury Automobile Association's delegates will be Messrs W W. Maxtor. K. R. G uinness, Ralliser, K. J. M’Keown. and E. A. Scott. \ ear being tested for speed is a real thriller (states the Auckland Star Whirling along with throttle wide open, it is a common thing in the early morn t/> encounter flocks of birds. Hurled against the windscreen, they are scattered dead or maimed in all directions. Whack, wha(k, on the radiator, they are flung aside by the motive chariots, with the same abandon as Brer Rabbit, hesitating in his road peregrinations; is flicked aside, killed, or fltunned by the speeding car. Between Eo\ton and Sandon on one recent speed trial a blackbird wa.-> caught on the front glass

of the car. There was a momentary splutter of blood on the wind-screen, and this plump representative of the bird-world was planed off and fell dead with a thud into the back seat of the car. where it, was discovered later. Time and tide wait for no bird when a record has to be broken. -——Some little time ago a well-known private owner made the assertion that there was no standard English car pro-

duced which was capable of lapping Brookkinds at 100 m.p.li. Mr L. Ropner recently ordered one of the new 30-98 h.p. Vauxhalls on condition that it actually did a lap of Brooklands at 100 m.p.li. \\ hen driven on its acceptance lest race for Mr Ropner. bv Air M. t . Park, it not only lapped at over 100 m.p.li., but also exceeded 105 m.p.li. in the teeth of a 30 in.p.h. wind down the railway straight. The car was s °!d at the ordinary price, and was in no way a special model. The speed was accomplished without wings, but with two spare wheels, and this performance is undoubtedly a very meritorious one. and gives every credence to the claim that the 30-93 k-P- > auxi]a 1! is (he fastest standard car produced in England.
