CLUTHA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the council was held in the County Chambers, -Balclutha, on Thursday, 21st ult., when there were present: Messrs A. North (chairman). D. R. Jack, Robert M’lndoe, W. S. Thomson, Alex. MTntyre, Henry Morrison, Thomas Maginness, James Gumming, Win. Lawson. An apology was received from Cr Harris. The engineer (Mr J.*TI. Lewis) reported for the period ending 21st ult.—Adopted. Receipts for period ending December 19:—Rates, £365 3s lid; motor receipts, £6 Is; dog tax, 7s 6d : refunds roads and works, 14s; rents, £23 2s; deposit contracts, £10; tramway deposit, £lO; —total £415 8s sd. The expenditure for the period ending December 19 was £917 4s 3d. It was resolved that all rates must be paid by January 31, 1923. For the position of office assistant there were 12 applicants, and after discussion it was decided to apoint Miss Jean M. Sutherland Tenders were received for the supply of dog collars. The successful tenderer was J. D. Watson (Invercargill) at-68s 9d per ICO^ The Minister of Public Works notified that, council’s application for a grant of £IOO for repairs to Lakeside road was being considered.--Received T. M’Kibhin, medical officer of health, acknowledged council’s notification that Mr E. Sinclair had been appointed sanitary inspector and inspector of nuisances.—Received The District Engineer, N.Z.R.. advised that the Commissioner of Crown Lands had been asked to take the necessary steps for the issue of a certificate of title to Thomas Irvine for the land at Wairuna recently given up by the Railway Department.—Received. E. Sinclair, local inspector Department of Health forwarded copy of notice served on Messrs Hogg and Co., Tahakopa.— Received. D. M. Cochrane (solicitor. Gore) wrote asking council to take proceedings under “The Land Drainage Act, 1913,” to have (he watercourses and drains through M’Kee’s swamp cleaned out, as his client (William Miller, Clinton) had from 16,000 to 18,000 drainage pipes blocked as a result of the neglect of these drains.—lt was decided that Mr M‘Kee be asked to remove all obstructions, so as to give William Miller’s pipes a free run. William Horsburgh and six other ratepayers of Wharetoa petitioned council to have the Burke’s Ford-Tuapeka Mouth road metalled, especially that portion between Washpool Creek and the school. Petitioners asked that the Government grant available be spent before the winter.—Decided that the engineer make applications for a giant of £IBO. C. A. Jur.ge (Houipapa) notified that he had broken a shaft of his cart on the road from Hourston’s corner to Wilson’s, and held council responsible for the damage. Resolved that the council be not responsible for anv damage done. The road, it seemed, was being repaired now. .lames D. Calder (Owaka) applied for permission to cross the road at Cliaslands with a telephone wire.—Permission granted. James D. Bain (Tahatika) applied for permission to erect swing gate on roadline adjoining section 9, block VI, Catlins survey district.—Granted. D. Campbell (Pine Hill) wrote asking that the . stream above his property at Wilsher bo returned to its natural course or piped through his property. —Left with the engineer to attend to. Lalta Bros. (Stuarts) applied for permission to erect a tramway on roadline between sections 18, 21, and 19, block IV, Tautuku S.D. —Granted.

'J he Secretary Department of Labour drew attention to the fact that council was required to call a special meeting in January lor the purpose of fixing the weekly Halfholiday.—Resolved that the meeting be held on Ihe next ordinary meeting day. George Gray (Popotunoa) wrote resigning as ranger for the Ponialiaka Riding.— Resignation accepted. The District Engineer, N.Z.R.. wrote that Wm. Goss (Ltd.) were applying to cross the railway line with a tramway, and his department wished to know if council was likely to agree to the crossing and tramway on the road.—No objection to be raised. O. Chittock (Waikoikoi) forwarded petition signed by 12 ratepayers asking that the main Gore-Tapanui road between Waikoikoi and Waikaka Valley be repaired.— To be attended to as soon as possible. D. Weir, secretary Clydevale Farmers' Union, forwarded resolution passed by his branch favouring the reduction of surfacemen’s wages.—Held over. Robert S. White and nine other ratepayers wrote with regard to the urgent necessity of metalling Cheetwood road, and asking why the work had not been attended to.—lnformation to be supplied. It was resolved that the council's employees be granted the usual four days’ holidays, and that the office be closed from .Saturday, December 23. to Monday, January 8. 1923. Resolved that the dog registration fee be the same as last year. It was resolved that the question of a bridge loan be reconsidered at the January meeting of the council.
