WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL

The usual meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council was held yesterday; present —Crs Briscoe (chairman), Overton, Gilmore, Laley, M'Lachlan, and M’Gill. The Chairman welcomed back Cr Laley, who returned recently from a trip to the Old Country. CORRESPONDENCE. W. G. Anderson asked permission to cut a load of manuka between Warrington and Evansdale.—Granted, subject to the inspector’s approval. G. Stuart (Waitati) asked that a culvert in front of his property should be cleared out.- —Inspector to attend to the matter. W. J. Gray (Evansdale) requested to be appointed poundkeeper, having taken over his predecessor's business. —Agreed to. The secretary. Karitane Domain Board, drew the council’s attention to a hut, belonging to Mr Mungo Kirkwood, which had been erected on the roadline of the reserve.—lnspector to report. G. W. Gibson wrote again drawing the council’s attention to the state of the road fronting his property at Warrington, describing it as being literally just a stockyard. The ranger told him that on hot days the stench was terrible. He. asked the council to treat the matter as one of urgency.—lt was decided to instruct the ranger to attend to the nuisance. John M'Connachio wrote at length regarding the council’s instruction to him to remove certain buildings on the roadline near the foreshore at ?orakanui. He stated that hp was willing to shift, if the Purakanui Amenities Society, which started him in business, found another section for him, and if the council paid for the shift. The writer also alleged persecution and defamation of character.—lt- was decided t° notify him that unless he removed the buildings proceedings would be taken. GENERAL. The dog tax was fixed at 2s 6d for collies and 5s for other dogs. The ranger was appointed collector for Blueskin and North-east Valley, and Mr Steven for Hawkesbury and Merton. The tender of J. M’Grath for the supply of dog collars was accepted in the sum of £3 12s 6d, and 3jd for relabelling. It was resolved to write to Mr J. M. Dickson, M.P., regarding the council’s inability to obtain authority from the Public Works Department for the expenditure of a Government grant of £IOO for the Sawyers Bay-Port Chalmers road. The inspector’s report ’on the work of the last month was read and adopted. It was decided to paint and tar the Waikouaiti and Pleasant Valley bridges, and to metal portion of the Main road in Merton between the bridge and the old toll gate. Certain alterations were also authorised to improve the turning place on the road in Purakanui Township. The inspector was also authorised to repair the decking in the bridge at Waitati.
