The Great Northern Derby, which comes up for decision on New Year’s Day. should provide an interesting contest between Enthusiasm, Ranine, and Highland. The former has her victory in the New Zealand Derby to recommend her, and will probably be the popular selection Rapine has been galloping attractively in his work, and is sure to run a good race. Highland showed good form at the A.R.’C. Spring meeting by accounting for a good field in the King Edward Memorial Handicap, of one mile and a-quarter, and as he has gone on the right way in the meantime the sou of Finland should play a prominent part in the settlement of the event Glentruin has put up some brilliant track work at Ellerslie. On Saturday morning she galloped six furlongs outside the trestles (which were well out) in 1.16 4-5, and appeared to do it very easily. Economist has been a bit sore, but appears to he all right again, and will tjrobably race at the later days of the meeting. Royal Present .galloped a fast mile outside the trestles on Thursday morning,, running the distance in 1.44. The son of Berragoon will have an opportunity to show how good he fs before the meeting closes. Rational will probably be brought north for the Royal Stakes, run on the concluding day of the meeting. A select field is engaged in the event, including the pick of the two-year-olds, Epitaph and The Hawk. The latter never looked better than at present, and is sure to keep the rest busy. Gold Light is galloping very well in her work, and should pick up a stake at the meeting. It is rather unfortunate she is not engaged in the Derby. Landslide is galloping in great style, and should not be Tong in getting on the winning list. The son of Kenilworth stays on well. Last season he won the Takapuna Cup, one mile and a half. RACING IN NEW ZEALAND DUNEDIN SUMMER MEETING. First Day—Tuesday, December 26. The Dunedin Jockey Club’s Summer meeting opened in fine weather and an excellent attendance viewed the day’s sport. The track was a bit on the soft side at the opening of the card, but under the influence of a strong sun and breeze the going firmed up quickly and Battle Scene equalled the traok record when she won the Federal Handicap. The card provided some interesting racing and as the scratching pen was seldom brought into use good fields contested the various events. The various fields were sent away from a fair line on each occasion, though slow beginnerp at times spoilt the appearance of the start. This, however, was not attributable to the starter nor did it discount the value of his work. After the Trial Stakes an inquiry was held into interference met with by Gay Lad and Frisco Mail. E. Deslandes, the rider of Reality, was cautioned an’d held responsible for the trouble. Some others appeared to have met with interference during the day, but apparently it was net deemed worthy of official notice by the stipendiary stewards as no intimation of further inquiries reached the press room. Altogether the card provided an enjoyable day’s outing at Wingatui and should whet the appetite of the Hub’s patrons for further participation in the meeting. Proceedings opened with all on the card except Slavish going to the post for the Summer Hurdles, for which Claverhouse was made a rather better favourite than Mazama and then came Glenshine and Londonderry. When the field settled down Red Pal and Londonderry were disputing the leadership with the former losing ground at each flight of hurdles through swerving. Grange and Sweet Memory were always fairly close up, but a good deal of chopping and changing of positions took place between some of the others. Approaching the straight the field closed up and Londonderry was still in charge, whilst St. Easel was making up lost ground. Glenshine, who had tailed off in the early part, also raced up to tile leading division. Londonderry led over the last hurdle and stalling off Manama won by a head. 'The rider of the winner seemed to ride a rather confident race as the winning margin would have been greater if he bad made more use of his horse in the run home. The distance proved too far for some of them and St Easel finished a moderate third and Claverhouse next in order. The favourite ran a bad race He was handy enough as thev left the straight., but seemed to jump badly at times. Red Pal’s swerving about at his hurdles may have caused some interference and helped others to get into trouble. Ardour. Petunia, and Dianella were struck out of the Salisbury Handicap in which Pilliewinkie was elected a strong favourite, with Bosker Boy and Wharfedale next, in demand. They got away from a good line from which Wharfedale and Pilliewinkie took up the running, when the field settled down. Balasor unshipped his rider early in the race. Going along the back the two leaders were closely attended bv Incursio, Bosker Bov, and Loughrea, whilst San Salvador drew up before reaching the straight. When well inside the distance Pilliewinkie shot out and won by over a length from Loughrea. who came with a late run and heat Wharfedale nearly two lengths for second place. Incursio was close tip fourth, followed by San Salvador, Kil-

brin. Bosker Boy ran wide at the turn. The winner’s record stands at two starts and two wins, and judging by the manner in which he shot out when called upon at the finish more success is in store for him. Two of the runners were not artistically handled, to say the least. The winner is another good sort, which creates regret at the early death of Winkie, whose stock all seem to have the gift of galloping. Waterspray, the dam of the winner, was got by Glenapp, from Puavvai by Reflector —Neroli, by Artil.ery— Nenuphur, by Apremont, and belongs to a good producing taproot in the No. 14 family. Seven youngsters faced the barrier for the Dunedin Handicap, and at the close ofbetting Lucinette started a better favourite than Bonnie Lake, whilst good support also came for Dinner Bell. They were in good line at the rise of the barrier, but. The Parisian swerved and lost ground. Dinner Bell was smartest out, with Bonnie Lake and Carpenlier. Before going two furlongs Dinner Bell went fight back, and Carpentier and Bonnie Lake'" led towards the home turn, where Dinner Bell had raced up to the leaders again. Bonnie Lake was in trouble before straightening for home, and Carpentier was in charge from Dinner Bell. Lucinette then moved up, and answering a vigorous call stayed on well, and beat Dinner Bell over two lengths. Eaton Bells drew up and finished third, but Carpentier faded out into fourth place, followed by Bonnie Lake. The winner put. up s£lb over to secure Emmerson’s services, and the extra weight was used ad van tageously, as horsemanship played a big part in the success. The winner was got by Martian from Lady Lucy by Seaton lielaval from Hilda by Musket—Ouida by Yattendon, and traces back to the Cutty Sark taproot. Of those that finished be hind the winner Eaton Bells seems sure to show improvement with more experience. Mantua was the only withdrawal from the Otago Handicap. Limelight, was always a likely favourite when the betting opened, and still retained that position when the totalisator shut down on business. Sunny Lcch was next in demand, and then at a considerable falling away came Deucalion and General Advance They got away from a fair line, from which Corn Rigs. Sunny Loch, and Silver Peak were smartest to show out. Corn Rigs quickly drew clear, and established a good l leas! from Whipping Boy and Sunny Loch, whilst Royal Mac and Limelight were at the tail of the field after leaving the mile post. Corn Rigs was allowed to set his own pace along the back, but before reaching the straight Sunnr Loch went after him, and was handy a: the home turn. Once in the straight Deucalion arrived on the scene, and racing past Corn Rigs won well by over a length. Sunny Loch was hanging badly when called upon for a final effort, and swerving over to the rails 100yds from home was nearly deprived of third place by Silver Peak, who was only a short neck away. Next oa.me Twinkle, Castellan, Limelight, and General Advance. Whipping Boy faded out a long way from home, and Limelight was hopelessly before going three furlongs. She showed up behind the leaders three furlongs from home, but was conceding them too much start at that stage of the proceedings. General Advance had dropped back last ever four furlongs from home, but afterwards moved up, although it was hopeless to expect to win from such a position Silent King apparently struck trouble, as approaching the three-furlong post he was several lengths in the rear. Royal Mac was never dangerous. Castellan ran a fair race, but found the journey too far. Corn Rigs nearly brought off a win by none of the light-weights making any attempt to make him feel the journey. The winner was well handled, as he never arrived on ine scene until the right moment, but was perhaps a shade fortunate that Sunny Loch went up' to Corn Rigs at the home turn and so gave him a try-out that did not help his chance at the finish. Silver Peak stayed on better than expected, but viewed from all aspects it seems as if the best horse on the day landed the stakes. Piokaninny soon drew clear in the Trial Stakes, and made a one-horse race of it. Gay Life and Barricon stayed on best of the others, but nothing had a chance with the winner. Many Kittle was sent out a pronounced favourite for the Federal Handicap, carrying more than twice the support accorded Listening Post, who was elected second choice. Battle Scene began smartly, and, drawing clear of Bon Spec, soon established a good lead. Many Kittle was second at the home turn, but was under pressure, ana Battle Scene went on to win by four lengths from BOn Spec, who just beat In the Pink and Many Kittle, the two finishing in close order. Listening Post was fifth, and then came Kerb, who was last to leave the mark. Contempt was made first favourite for the Burnside Handicap, and was close enough to have a winning chance when she got sent back about four furlongs from home. Lovesign was in charge early, and, finally stalling off Ardour, won by a short length. Avispado was three lengths away third, but the first two practically had the finish to themselves. Contempt might have been a lot closer up if she had escaped interference. Red Gown was made a pronounced favourite for the Otokia Welter, and justified the confidence by winning well at the finish after making up a lot of ground. Both Lomagundi and Mirza, who had acted as pacemakers, faded out, and so did Sweetwater, who was well up in the early stages. Lady Blissful outstayed Tin Soldier in the run for second money. Red Admiral was moving up, but got wide out at the home turn, and lost a lot of ground. Miss Muriel and Sembric were slow to move and never in the hunt. The totalisator investments for the day amounted to £30.452 10s, as against £33,097 10s for the corresponding day of last year, the decrease being £2555. .Following are the results:— SUMMER HURDLE HANDICAP, Of 275sovs, second horse 55sovs, and the third 27g.sovs. One mile and threequarters. 4Mr L. Red Pal swerved very badly at the hurdle. Londonderry had joined Red Pal at the stand, St. Easel, Sweet Memory, Grange coming next, Glenshine bringing up the rear. Londonderry and Red Pol were three lengths clear xf St. Easel coming to the hurdle at the mile post, then came Grange and Claverhouse. Red Pal was losing ground, and jumping badly. Approaching the six-furlong post Londonderry, Red Pal, Grange, Mazama. and were running in close order. Mazama ran into second place at toe far turn, and Sherlock fell. Coming up the rise Londonderry, Red Pal, Mazama, and Glenshine were showing the way to Grange. C-alma unseated her rider at the second last fence, and the field closed up. Once in the straight Red Gown moved up, aud, going on, won by a good length from Lady Blissful, who lasted long enough to l>eut Tin Soldier by a head. Then came Mirza, Lomagundi, and Red Admiral. Time, lmin 41 4-ssec. Second Day —Wednesday, December 27. ’J he Dunedin Jockey Club’s summer meeting was concluded in fine but dullish weather, blit fortunately a threat of rain did not become a fact until the card concluded. ’lhe track was much firmer than on the opening day, and the card again provided some interesting racing. The attendance compared favourably will) that of the opening day, and the financial returns must, be deemed satisfactory when viewed in the light of tihe general to wards shrinkage in that respect. Mr A. I>. M’lvor did satisfactory work at the barrier, and could adopt with advantage the method of lining up the field prior to the signal indicating that the investments had been balanced. He did so in connection willli the Taihoa Handicap, and made the best effort he achieved at the meeting. 'llio meeting served to introduce Mr W. Russell as a handicapper, and whilst it would not be wise to express a pronounced opinion as to the value of his work on the results of one meeting, it may be said that he rnav prove a much needed addition to the ranks of weight adjusters in the South Islam!, 'lhe meeting, taken all round, was very enjoyable, good weather and participation'— in a popular sport helping to make Wingatui gather popularity as eg sporting rendezvous at -holiday time. Backers singled out Mazama and St. Easel in the Milburn Hurdles, and they were right on the spot, as they split the dividend money for first and second after a good race. Sherlock took up the role of pacemaker, and was always closely attended by Red Admiral, Grange, and Londonderry, whilst at the far turn Mazama was well back. Londonderry came through on the rails at the home turn, and led to the last hurdle, but sprawled on landing. He, however, appeared to have the race won at the distance, and as on the previous day was taking things rather easily when St. Easel and Mazama flashed on the scene and in a good finish St. Easel just, got there from Mazama, whilst Londonderry was about half a length away. Claverhouse might have been more dangerous, but his rider appeared to turn loose at his fences, and did not help his chances by being thrown back in the saddle each time the horse took off at a jump. Sweet Memory was prominent in the early stages, but faded out. The Fernhill Handicap field caused trouble at the post, the principal offender being Raconteur, who finally was first to show out when the barrier rose. When the field settled down Martial Dance took charge from Petunia, Dianella, Proceeder, and Loughrea. San Salvador joined the leaders before reaching the home turn, where Petunia took charge At the distance Loughrea, who was boring in on the rails, finally came through and won by well over a length from Sail Salvador, who apparently had very little in his favour from Frisco Mail, who arrived late on the scene with a good run aftei being well back in the early stages of the race. Raconteur appeared to get fourth place, but the barren honours weie awarded to Petunia, and then came Piunelia. The winner obviously benefited hy a change of riders, and is apparently not a boy’s horse. He won well, but he requires experienced horsemanship to produce his best. In the preliminary First Aid unshipped his rider, and atterwards jumped the rails. Lucinette moved a bit sore when she went down.. The Parisian was smartest to begin, and Eato.o Bells soon ran into second place, whilst. Dinner Bell Lucinette were a bit slow to move. Eaton Belis gathered The Parisian at the turn and, kept busy, came on to win by over two lengths irom Carpentier, who. beat Lucinette by about a length and a-half. Dinner Bell was finishing . on, but his effort caine too late. Olympia made a run in the straignt, but could not gather sufficieiu way to bring him near the money. lhe winner is a shapely Austrahan-brecl Ely. got by the imported horse Eaton Lad from the Multiform rnare Formicary. Many Kittle was electee} a slightly better favourite than Limelight in the St. Andrew s Handicap, and fair support came for Coin Rigs and Silver Peak, but the others were comparatively neglected. They got away from a prompt despatch, and when they settled down Corn Rigs was in charge from a close-running field, with the exception ot General Advaiice, who had dropped back. Many Kittle had Corn Rigs settled at the home turn, and was in charge approaehinv the distance, but here Limelight on the outside and Silver Peak on the rails arrived on the scene. They soon had Many Kittle's measure, and Limelight looked a winner, but Silver Peak beat her nicely at the finish. Whipping Boy was a moderate third and then came Many Kittle and General Advance. The last-named lost o-round over the first half-mile, run in 40-cc but was coming 011 at the end, and should be much better suited over more ground. Corn Rigs again failed when pinched, and finished last. Battle Scene was sent out a slightly better favourite than Bon Spec in the Grand Stand Handicap. They were in good line at the release of the barrier, and _ Kerb, who was left and last fo move in the Federal Handicap, reversed the order, and at once showed out in front from Bon SpecKerb won from end to end, and Battle Scene, who threatened danger at the turn, faded out at the business end, and Mantua came through and stalled off. Deucalion for second money. Deucalion ran a good race for a horse who has been running over a distance. Listening Post never seemed to pace it with the light-weights, although running behind Kerb, Battle Scene, and Bon Spec as they were racing for the home Prior to the start for the Taihoa Handicap the starter lined his field up whilst waiting for the balloon to rise, and could adopt similar methods with advantage. They got away from an excellent line, and Bonnie Friend and Ravenna singled themselves out before reaching the far turn. Ravenna was attended by Uleaborg and Avispado at the home turn. She kept on and won from Uleaborg, whilst Contempt, wide on the outside, appeared to drop, from the clouds, and waa flying at the finish, but failed to get up, but it was in doubt as to what had

gained second place until the numbers went up. Ruena also finished fast, and was close up with Contempt. Wharfedale was well up at the turn, but weight anchored him in the run home, and so it did to Avispado, who appeared to have a chance as they entered the straight. Ardour, with the benefit of a 7lb allowance, really made a one-horse race of the Allanton Welter, but with her out of th“ way it was a fine finish, as Osterman, Twinkle, and Eleus were almost in line, and Tin Soldier and Red Gown were close up. Sunny Loch outclassed the in the Farewell Handicap, and won comfortably. Etta was in charge three furlongs from home, but she ran wide at the turn, or would at least have been second, although holding no chance with the winner. After the Grand Stand Handicap a complaint by G. Fisher (In the Pink) and E. Deslandos (Mantua) of having been crossed at the five-furlong, four-furlong, and threefurlong posts by C. R. Emerson (Listening Post) was inquired into by the judicial stewards. After hearing statements of the above riders and F. E. Jones (Deucalion), it was decided that the evidence did not warrant any action being taken. In connection with the above, it may be said that interference possibly took place in the early part of the raoe, but at the throe-furlong post Kerb. Battle Scene, Bon Spec, and Listening Post were practically running in single file, and at that stage no other horse was near Listening Post. The sum put through the total!.set or was £27,322 10s. and the total for the two days was £57,865. The second day of the corresponding: day for last year the investments were £31,341 10s, and the total for the two days £64.439. For the two days 1 here was this year a decrease of £6574.
