THE OATH OF ALLEGIANCE
C'HRISTHCURCH TEACHER’S OBJECTION. CHRISTCHURCH, April 27. A master at the Christchurch Boys’ High School (Mr A. W. Pago) has refused to take the oat.li of allegiance required of all school teachers, unless he is allowed to amplify it with a. conscience clause. In consequence Mr Page has ceased to act as a teacher. Mr Page wished to add the following proviso to the oath provided byi, “The Education Amendment Act, 1921” : “So long as the above undertaking continues not to conflict with what- I consider my duty to God.” The Canterbury College authorities who ' oonvrol the Bovs’ High School, declined to take the responsibility for accepting the i oath in this amended form, and for the ! present, at any rate, Mr Page has ceased. I to act. as a teacher. Mr Page is a son of Mrs Sarah Page, who was formerly a mem- j her of the Christchurch Oitv Council and a j well-known figure in tht Labour movement ! in Christchurch.
