CASUALTIES.
A young man, Harry Kaan, driver of a baker’s delivery van, was injured by an explosion of petrol when he struck a match. Kaan drove three miles to the Waimate Hospital in a state of collapse. Arthur M'Dookin, a single man, 33 years of age, employed at the Bruce Woollen Mills at Milton, was admitted to the Dunedin Hospital on Saturday, 22nd ult., suffering from severe injuries to his left hand, caused through being caught in a part of the machinery. .Neil Albretson, aged 51 years, was killed on the 24tli ult. by the early train from the north. Albretson. driving a cart laden with meat was entering Taumarunui by the level crossing. The engine missed the horse and struck the cart, which was smashed to matchwood. Albretson fell on to the front of the footplate of the engine, remaining there till the train was pulled up two hundred yards nearer the station. His skull was fractured, and he died a few minutes after admission to the hospital A motor car conveying Mr and Mrs MTlraith and two children and Mrs R. M’Leay and two children ran into a train at the railway crossing at Waihoa Forks on the 26th. The train struck the motor carat a slight angle, and the vehicle was thrown clear, but was smashed to matchwood. Mrs MTlraith sustained injuries to her spine and head, and was taken to the hospital. The other occupants were bruised and shaken only. * Jacob Smith, aged 60. a timber yard Worker, was found dead in his bedroom at Wellington on the 26th, and it, is believed that death was due to heart failure. Mr Charles William Allen manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Woodville. while holidaying at Paekakariki, went bathing on Monday, 24th ult., was caught in the undertotv, and drowmed before his wife’s eyes. A man named Wilson, though an indifferent swimmer, made a plucky but ineffectual attempt to rescue Allen, and then ran half a mile to the surf club’s shed; whence two members hurried out. brought Mr Allen's body ashore, and efforts to restore respiration were continued by a doctor for two hours, but proved fruitless. William Mowat, aged 24, residing at Harbour terrace, was admitted to the Hospital last week suffering from injuries to his head, caused by a collision with a motor car in Stuart street while he was riding a bicycle. Percy Herbert Conway was thrown from a. motor cycle in Christchurch while endeavouring to avoid a cyclist and was suffering from injuries from which he died in the ambulance on his way to the hospital. A sad accident occurred atWaikaia on Monday last (says the Mataura Ensign). The infant son (about 13 months old) of Mr Walter Thomson was playing in the house when it pulled the tablecloth off the table and dislodged a dipper of hot water, The water was spilled over the child's shoulder and chest, which were badly scalded. A certificated nurse was called in. and Dr Rogers subsequently attended, but the child died from shock shortly after 3 o’clock on Thursday morning. An accident occurred on the liner Durham at Wellington. A heavy cargo derrick was taking the weight of a sling of cheese, when the tackle carried away and the derrick crashed across the coamings of No. 3 hold. Fortunately, no one w 7 as underneath, but a watersider named Michael Barry, who was at the winch, had his hand caught between the derrick and the winch lever. The hand was badly crushed, and the man's side and bacE W'ere bruised. Robert Atkins, a farmer at Luggate. was accidentally killed through the capsize of a dray, causing the dislocation of his neck. He leaves a widow and five children. At the inquest on Mary Alexandria Frame, who died suddenly at Napier, a verdict that death was due to extensive degeneration of the heart was returned. Christina Shanks, a widow, aged 60 years, residing at 14 Perth avenue, was admitted to the Hospital on Friday night, suffering from a compound fracture of the left 'ankle. The accident was caused through a fall in her dwelling.
