THE RAILWAY “CUT”
DUNEDIN QUEENSTOWN SERVICE. The following letter has been received by the secretary, Otago Expansion League, from the Hon. D. H. Guthrie, ActingMinister of Railways:With reference to your representations regarding the petition of residents of the I.ake district for the continuation of a daily service between Dunedin and Queenstown and the reinstatement of tbe week-end excursions, I have the honour to inform you that for many years the Railway Department has annually experimented in the hope of building up a traffic, but without success. The trains do not pay their way, neither does the Lake steamer service. The traffic to Queenstown does not warrant the continuation of a costly daily train service, and in the circumstances I regret that the request cannot be complied with. Holiday excursion tickets will be issued at Easter from Tuesday, 11th April, until Monday, 17th idem, and will be available for return any time up to and including Thursday, 18th May, but nothing beyond this is justifiable.
