BANKING RETURNS
SOME INTERESTING FIGURES. WELLINGTON, October 7. The banking returns show that a year ago the t anks had an excess of deposits cf £14.113.886. Three months ago the position had changed over to a n excess of advances to the amount of £8,874.392. Advances y.Tpj.e sti'l in excess of deposits, but the excess vv,is now £4,533 ; 94o —a reduction of £4,230,444- on the preceding quarter, brought about, by an improvement on the balance of trade, chiefly a reduction on importations, The figures compared with three months ago are :
