OAMARU MARKETS. (Fbom Ocb Ow* Cocbis?ond*nt.) OAMaRU, October 8. Store cattle are in equally bad case, for there are no buyers, and to quit them ex- ; tremely low pri es have to l>e accepted, as, for example, 41s per head for a pen of two-year-old steers at this week’s sale. The only class of cattle for which there is any demand are milkers, and that demand is due to the presence of southern searchers for | dairy stock. For anything good there i 3 a ready sale, and at this week’s market cows in good condition and just at profit brought from £l4 to £ls 15s, and medium quality from £0 to £ll 10s. A line of tliree-year-old j heifers jus:, at profit was placed at £B. . ! There has been little doing in the grain and produce market. The wheat supplies in growers' hands lias been exhausted, only driblets now coming forward. With nearly five months of the cereal year yet to provide for millers are beginning to inquire whence they are to get supplies to carry theni on until the next season’s grain becomes available. Their inquiries have not brought satisfying replies, and the opinion is gaining ia 1 shortage of wheat in the dominion. There is a feeling of doubt and uncertainty as Is the future of oats, and the market is lifeless. A few transactions on a modest scale are reported in milling and A grade Gartens at 3s net at country sidings. • the rest t pr duce markets present, a blank sheet. SOUTHLAND MARKETS. RATES OF EXCHANGE FOR IMPORTED GOODS. j With reference to the notification gazetted on August 25 last, it has now been decided that the rate of exchange for importations from all countries is, from January 1 next, to be taken at the ’current bank rate for telegraphic transfers at date of export. With regard to goods of Canadian origin shipped from New York or other United States ports, or to United States goods shipped from Montreal, St. John, or Vancouver, tli© date of export is the date of crossing the border on. the way to the port of shipment, but in view of the difficulty of determining the actual date of such crossing it has been decided to adopt a date 10 days prior to the date of sailing of the exporting vessel, and the rate of exchange current on that date is to be taken uniformly for duty purposes in respect of all goods ; from Canada, via U.S.A., and from U.S.A., j via Canada, respectively, in any given ship. : Regarding Continental goods transhipped at : London, Genoa, Marseilles, etc., merchants t must arrange to obtain the necessary information as to the date of export from the Continental country. Where such informa-. 1 lion is not available at date of entry th© collector may accept the bank rate, of exchange for telegraphic transfers which the evident probabilities suggest as approximately correct.
