CONFERENCE IN WELLINGTON. A ELLING lON, August 3. A highly important conference for coa« sideration of matters connected with Liewe ra lands has been opened at Huatoki. Representatives of the Lands Department ana the Native Department are meeting Native owners tor discussion of a scheme put forward by the Government for consolidation of Government and Native interests in the U raw-era block. Mr A. X. .xgatu, M. 8., is watching the interests of Native owners. When the Government! purchase?, amounting to some 300,C00 acres, have been defined, the subdivision of land for settlement will be proceeded with as once. It is intended that the Maori owners of tho balance of the 1 Tewera block shall have their titles defined individually, and, '..hen individualised, these lands will fco liable for payment of rates on tlie same basis as European lands.
