FALLING FRIGES.
THE LATEST INDEX FIGURE. The July number of tho Abstract of Statistics which lias just been issued, shows that the index number for the three food groups as at Juno 15 (dominion weighted average) is 1772, a decrease of 19 points a-s compared with the preceding month’s figure (1791), and an increase of 65.61 per cent, as compared with that for July, 1914 Almost all the jiems have contributed to the decline of 28 points in the index number for the groceries group—potatoes, rice, and tinned fruits allowing the largest, reductions. Iho fall of 35 points in the dairy produce group is wholly attributable to the dec-lino in the price of eggs, a decrease of approximately 7d per dozen being general. Tiie meat, index number is 4 points in advance of the May figure. This index number had shown a fall each month from December, 1920, to May, 1921, the “peak” index number being 1690, while the corresponding figure for June. 1921, is 1374.
Keeping a pipeful of tobacco alight for two hours 12 minutes, a smoker created a record at the Agricultural Hall, Islington, 1 in 1907.
