CASUALTIES.
Mathewson, an electric mechanic in the Public Works Department, while engaged on the 31st ult-. in alterations to the Waihi Company’s power-house (Waikino) fell from a scaffold on to the concrete floor, causing concussion of the brain. He was adiniite'd to the Waihi Hospital. An elderly man named Bishop, believed io be 70 years of age, foil dead in a Wellington .street. Ho has a sister living in the locality but no other relations in tlie dominion. Catherine Turner Wedderspoon, 74 years of age, who resided with her husband at Mosgiel, died suddenly on Sunday, 31r. An inquest was held on the Ist by Mr J. R. Bartholomew. S.M. The husband deposed that bis wife had difficulty in getting home from church. She was put to bed, and Dr Shaw was summoned, but Mrs Wedderspoon passed a wav before he arrived at tho house. The deceased suffered from heart trouble, and had been attended by Dr Allan about 18 months ago. Dr Shaw gave evidence, and the coroner returned a verdict oE d“ath from heart failure, following senile changes. Another sudden death, tlie third reported since Sunday, occurred at Wellington on tho 2nd. The deceased, a married man named Jose T h Bald win, 48 years old, was a I carpenter, and had enjoyed good health. D. Hfigarty, tho well-known Canterbury horseman, had a fall at Rice art-on on the 2nd while schooling Bay Lupin. lie was removed to the Christchurch Hospital, where it was found that, although lie had sustained injury to his spine, his condition is not dangerous. Bay Lunin broke a leg and had to he destroyed. Edward Murnii.v. aged fifty-seven, was killed on the 3rd by a fall of earth whilst woiking at Ho hstetter (Ahaura). Tim Superinten 'em ot [’oh e received information that :i. man named William Robinson. aged 70 v nr?, dropped dead at his iv idoi.ee in Upper Hutt on the 2nd. An explosion of gelignite occurred in a tunnel at the Mangah-io hydro-electric works on th 3rd. Alex. Alurcleck, aged 33 years, bring killed instantly. Michael Lynch received serious facial injuries, and will probably lose his sight. Murdock was married six weeks ago, and saw considerable service with the Tunnelling Corps at the war. In the early hours of the 7ili inst., on tho Awatoa road -approaching Napier, a taxi driven by W. Ramsay, having one occupant, a youth named David Sligh, aged 17 years, struck a wandering horse. Tho impact broke the steering gear, and the wheels locked. The car skidded and capsized with the result that Sligh sustained fatal injuries, and tho driver, who was thrown over the fence, was badly shaken. Tho horse was killed.
