CLUTHA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Clutha County Council was held in the County Chambers on the Ist, when there were peresent Crs Jas. Cumming (chairman), A. North, W. Lawson, 11. Morrison, T. Maginness, IX R. Jack, A. T. Harris, R. MTndoe, and W. S. Thomson. FINANCE. The Finance Committee reported that the receipts for the period totalled £6562 19s Bd. The expenditure was as follows: Bridges and ferries, £lll 16s 7d ; loans, £ll2 10s 2d; Government grants, £415 5s 9d; general, £l7lß 19s sdtotal, £2358 9s lid. TENDERS. The tender of J. Reinke for gravelling about 28 chains on Boag’s cr Horan’s road at 4s 9|d was accepted. For gravelling about 40 chains on Conical Hills School road there were seven tenders, and that of R. M’Phail for 4s 8d was accented. For breaking metal on Arthurton Landslip road, the tender of J. Ritchie for Is lid was ac : cepted. CORRESPONDENCE. , The Under-Secretary, Public Works Department, wrote that with regard to the claims for maintenance of roads made by the Southland County, and the commission held regarding same, nothing was said at the hearing about costs. Each side must pay its own. He regretted the matter could net. now be reopened.—Received. The Under-Secretary, Public Works Department, Wellington, wrote asking the council to pass a formal resolution agreeing to contribute pound for pound towards the cost of erecting a second-class bridge in New Zealand timbers at Hina Hina. The cost was approximately £3500, but the council would have to agree to find half of whatever the cost may be of both bridge and road approaches.—Cr Maginness formally moved the required resolution, which was carried. The District Engineer, Public Works Department, asked for consent of council to plan for road closed through sections 11 and 12, block V, Woodland S.D., and also for deviation on Catlins Valley to Table Hill road and on the Puaho road. —The chairman to sign plans. The District Engineer also wrote with regard to M’Kenzie road, Glenomaru, that ’t was necessary that the £l2O subsidy, £3O from the settlers and £9O from the council, be paid in before the work was started. —Cr North moved that the money be paid when the department was ready to start work, which was carried. The TJnder-Sccretary, Lands and Survey Department, wrote that he was obtaining a report on the Centre road, Otanomomo Settlement, and on receipt of it ho would communicate with the council. —Received. The Deputy Superintendent, State Advances Office, wrote that the board had agreed to grant a loan of £IOOO for the purpose of metalling a portion of the Clinlon-Owaka road from M'Kinnon’s Creek to Stewart’s Ford. —Received. J. Jacobs, Secretary Otago Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, wrote requesting the payment of £1938 14s 2d, supplementary levy.—Referred to the Finance Committee. L. W. Pol ter, Bruce County Clerk, wrote stating that the recommendations of the conference regarding punts and ferries between the members of the two counties had been agreed to by the Bruce County.—Agreed to by council, alterations to take eifect from Mat' 1. Roland Partridge (Glenomaru) wrote asking permission to fell bush on the river bank reserve fronting his property. —Received, council having no power to grant permission over reserve. Joseph George (Kahuika) wrote asking that the scrub on the roadline outside his property be cut down. —Left to member for riding to arrange. F. W. Jenks (Rajlnui) wrote regarding cattle trespassing on the read. —Received. G. S. Wright (Waiwcra) wrote asking for permission to plough gorse along ITillfoot road. --Granted on usual conditions. E. Clement (Popotunoa) wrote complaining of state of road near his property.—Received. George Symonds (Clinton) wrote drawing attention to the bad state of the road leading from the main road to his residence. —Left to member for the riding. W. Turner, Secretary Waiwera Public Library, wrote asking for payment of £l, being cost of repairing damage done by surfacemen whilo blasting. —To bo paid. William Goss (Ltd.), Christchurch, wrote asking permission to lay a tramway along tho Long Point road.—permission granted on usual conditions.

Robert Renton, Quakerfieid, Owaka, wrote asking for a road into his place.—• Left for engineer to report. Mrs Kate Cregan, Village Settlement, Owaka, wrote asking for metal on three chains on the road.—W ork to be carried out. E. D. M‘Phee, Owaka, wrote asking the council to metal a portion of the Big Mill road. —Left to engineer and member for riding. Joseph Pilgrim, Riverside, wrote asking for a few loads of gravel on the Otanomorno road towards Finegand.—To be attended to Hislop and Gibson wrote forwarding a report in detail on the car belonging to the county. —It was decided not to repair it. and the question of buying a new one was left to Crs Lawson, Maginness, Jack, and engineer, with power to act. D. Stewart and Son wrote regarding conveyance of Campbell street, Quakerheld, Owaka, and asking for a certificate. —Granted. DEPUTATIONS. Messrs Walker and Edgar waited upon the council with regard to a bridge at Tweedie’s crossing. Mr Walker addressed the council, explaining that the request had been before the council for over seven years. A bridge was urgently needed to connect with the Tapanui branch railway and to allow the children to get to school. Tho Government had promised them a grant of £6OO, the settlers guaranteed £4OO, and tho Tuapeka County would give £IOO. The Government engineer had approved of a site he was willing to give for the bridge. Members thought Tuapeka County should give a larger sum. It was finally agreed, after some discussion, that the erection of the bridge be proceeded with if the Tuapeka County agree to contribute £2OO. Aslin and Brown, solicitors, Dunedin, wrote with regard to tramway and bridge formerly owned by William Gwyn. They made formal application for the tramway rights. Mr E. Atlin waited upon the council and explained the position. It was really a renewal of a tramway right that was granted some years ago to W. Gwyn. ft was used by Latta Bros, as well as the applicants. Tho application was made on behalf of the mortgagees, as the reconstruction of the new company was not completed. Cr Lawson moved that the usual steps be taken to grant the request, which was carried. GENERAL. _ Cr Thomson asked permission to sell tho council section at Kakapuaka, ami that application be made for a loan for the erection of a worker’s house for the surfaceman. —The request was granted. It was agreed that the enginer inspect the Rongahere-Tuapeka Mouth riverside road with a view to having the rock removed from the water-tables; also that he have some repairs carried out to the surfaoiinaii’s house at Clyuevale. It was decided to grant the South Otago Hospital Board permission to use the Council Chambers for meetings. Cr Thomson said he had made full inquiries into the request of the Otanomomo Drainage Board for a grant for the Waiteneka canal. lie moved that the request be declined, and the motion was carried. The Chairman reported on the result of the conference with tho sawmillera. It was resolved, on the motion of Crs Lawson and North—“ That a charge cf 3d per ton per mile from sawmill or dwelling to railway station, steamer siding, or other destination be made upon all persons engaged in timber traffic on roads within the Clutha County, by way of a composition under the proviso of section 150 of “ The Public Works Act. 1908’’ ; 500 super feet of sawn limber to be taken ns one ton.”
