TIMARU HARBOUR.
INCREASE IN CHARGES. TIMARU, March At a special meeting of the Harbour Board to-day it was resolved—Messrs Turnbull and Isaacs dissenting—to increase wharfage and port charges by 10 per cent-., to make a berthage charge of a halpenny per ton (net register) per day, to increase the charge for ropes and fenders by 50 per cent., with a maximum increase from £ls to £3O, and to make a harbour improvement rate of 6d per ton on goods landed or shipped (except ballast and bunkering coal). A special meeting will be held on March 21 to adopt the by-law thus amended The charges are to meet the estimated deficiency in revenue of from £6OOO to £7OOO a year. Mr Turnbull proposed a surcharge of 25 per cent, on all the present charges, but strong opposition is shown to the increasing rate in some quarters.
