TUMAI ESTATE
SOLDIER SETTLEMENT SCHEME. PURCHASE PROPOSED. A public meeting was held in the Waikouaiti Borough Council Chambers on the 22nd _ult. with regard to purchasing the Tumai Estate for soldier settlement. The Mayor (Mr G. J. L. Kerr), in the chair, introduced Mr Jones, of Dunedin, to explain the suggestions on behalf of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, and the visitor was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The estate comprises 2248 acr/t, and it was stated that the land could be purchased for £38.000. Surveying and roading would cost within £SOOO. Messrs James Townsend and Allcock assured the meeting that the land was well watered. The estate could be with advantage cut up to support 12 soldier families. It was proposed by Mr T. Allcock, and seconded bv Mr D. Grant, that a petition be signed by residents of Waikouaiti and forwarded to the Minister praying that the Government acquire the estate, and cnt it up for closer settlement for soldiers. Advantage was taken of this meetirig to mention the matter of a memorial for the fallen soldiers of Waikouaiti. Two gentlement promised each £2O. and several £1 promises were recorded. The suggestion was to build a hall for returned soldiers.
