THE TIMARU MURDER
THE CONDEMNED MAN. CHRISTCHURCH, February 18. Mr C. S. Thomas, counsel for Reginald Matthews, hag communicated with the Minister of Justice with a view to securing a commutation of the sentence, of death to imprisonment for life. Since the death sentence was passed on Matthews he has been in Paparua Prison, where he is under conI stant watch day and night. Matthews took J hia sentence with evident signs of its full | import, but he soon regained his coraj posure, although maintaining rather a deI fiant attitude. He has not spent any time j writing, as Eggers did before his execution. INVERCARGILL, February 18. A petition is being promoted here praying the Governor-General to commute the ! death sentence passed on Reginald MatI thews for the murder of Clarence Wagi staffe at Timaru, and the * Minister of j J ustice has been requested to defer Cabi- ! net’s action pending the presentation of I the petition. The condemned man is a native of Invercargill.
