RIFLE SHOOTING

NEW PLYMOUTH HIGH SCHOOL’S SUCCESS. NEW PLYMOUTH, February 18. At New Plymouth High School to-day the medals won by the shooting teams in the various competitions were presented by Brigadier-general Melville, commander of the Central Military District Last year this school’s teams secured third place for the Empire in the Senior and Junior Divisions of the Imperial Challenge Shield matches. In the competition among New Zealand schools for a challenge shield donated by the Weekly Press Company the New Plymouth School won the shield in 1920 for the third year in succession. In presenting both the Empire medals and the Weekly Press Challenge medals. Brigadiergeneral Melville emphasised the excellence or rifle shooting as a sport, apart from the military value, which was also proved in 1914 by “The Contemptibles.” In regard to the Imperial competition, he remarked, if it had not been for the New Plymouth High School, the New Zealand teams would not have made a very good showing, and as commander for the district ho was pleased to note their success.
