INFANTILE PARALYSIS.
PRECAUTIONS URGED IN AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, January 19. The danger from an epidemic of infantile paralysis, such as exists in -Christchurch, was mentioned at the Auckland Hospital Board’s meeting, when questions were asked as to the readiness of the hospitals to meet a possible outbreak here. Mr Nerheny called attention to the necessity of doing something to cope with an epidemic, anil Mr A. Savage urged that the Government should be requested to treat the disease as if it were one to be dealt with in a national fashion. The chairman (Mr William Wallace) said tha-t when they got the Massage Department they looked for they hoped to be in a better position to deal with infantile paralysis if it did come. Mr Mackav spoke of the necessity of the Government facilitating th© treatment of children at Rotorua in order to induce them to go there in greater numbers. The question was left in the hands of the medical superintendent for report. CHRISTCHURCH. January 20. The reference in a telegram from Auckland to “an epidemic of infantile paralysis such as exists in Christchurch” was the subject of a question addressed to Dr Telford, medical officer of health for the Canterbury and Westland health district. Dr Telford said ho did not think there was any justification for referring to the oases in Christchurch as “an epidemic.” It wag a limited outbreak, confined to about a dozen cases. All the cases were isolated in hospital, and none remained outside. There had been no deaths from the disease, and only some of the ca.-eg showed moderate degrees of severity. There was no occasion for any alarm. The disease was prevalent in the Hawke’s Bay district in October, when four cases were notified in two weeks. The Canterbury cases extended over the period from December 10 to the present time.
