GRAVES AT PLYMOUTH
A REASSURING STATEMENT. WELLINGTON, January 21. News has been received from Plymouth (England) to the effect that statements recently made by correspondents, and repeated in the House of Representatives, that the graves of New Zealanders buried at Plymouth (England) have been neglected are incorrect. A complete refutation is given to the statements. The visit of the correspondent is recalled. He stated that his complaint was not that the Plymouth Corporation had been neglectful, but that the dominion Government had not handled the matter in the same way as the Australian Government, who had purchased the plots where the Australian soldiers were buried, and had made special arrangements with the Plymouth Corporation for those graves to be kept in order. The New Zealand Government had not acted that way; but that had had no effect upon the manner in which the graves had been kept. They are neat and orderly, and quite in keeping with the rest of the cemetery. Photos of the graves forwarded bear out the writer’s statement. He concludes: “I think this will reassure, and be appreciated by relatives at home, who are naturally anxious to ascertain what is being done regarding the graves of those they loved.”
