HANMER SPRINGS.

August 17. —On Tuesday afternoon Colonel D. Dutton, of Dunedin, who has been relieving at the Hanmer Springs Presbyterian Church for the past two months, was presented with a- handsome suede pocket-book by the inmates of Queen Mary Hospital. D.uring his stay here. Colonel Dutton has er cleared himself to the hearts, of every soldier in the institution, ■ and his services have been largely attended. The presentation was made by Sergeant J. Roial, and the recipient was loudly cheered. In returning thanks for the present they had given him, Colonel Dutton (who served on Gallipoli and elsewhere as a chaplain) said that during 31 years' acquaintance with, soldiers in the Volunteers, South African war, and in the late war ho had never met finor soldiers or men than the New Zealanders. His experience of them was the same as that recorded by the late Lord Roberts of his. troops in South Africa: "Our men fought like heroes and behaved like gentlemen." Colonel Dutton also referred to the magnificent work being done in Hanmer Springs by the Y.M.C.A. Social. —On Tueslay evening a farewell sccial was tendered to Rev. W. Norton and Mrs Norton, when they were presented with a silver-mounted oak tray, suitably inscribed. During the evening solos were sung by Miss M. iStuart and Ntirve Aichescn, 'Sergeant Roial, and Mr Vesper. Mr Johnston gave humorous recitations and Sergeant Roial a banjo solo. Addreses were given by Colonel Dutton and Rev. Mr Thompson (Moderator). A delicious supper was supplied by the ladies.
