WAIROA (Hawke's Bay).

August 17. —It is with regret that I have to report the death of Mr A. A. Winter, familiarly known as "Bert/' who. after a somewhat prolonged illness, died in the Hospital on Thursday night. The deceased gentleman was 48 years of age, the son of the late Martin and Jane Winter. For some time he was in partnership with h:s brother (Victor), as owners of the Opouiti Run; but alter selling out there, Bert mad© Wairoa his residence. He leaves a widow the daughter of the late" Mr Mayo, of Napier, but no family. His brother (Victor) is at present living in Auckland, since selling out his "Homeleigh" farm near Frasertown, and Mte-sdames Davies, Drysdale, W. and A.' B. Smith are sisters of the deceased'. Ttw» funeral ceremony was conducted on Sunday afternoon by Rev. W. _ Raeburn, amid very adverse weather conditions.

School Inspection.—lnspector Stevenson, till recently head master of the Woodvillo District High School (at present vacant), is engaged in the inspection of the schools of this district. He has completed the Wairoa District and Convent Schools, and has same -wintry travelling' before him to reach the outlying schools Weather. —The weather, which has "been mild and springlike for some time, has developed into ft regular winter g»le_ with Jieavy rain, about two and a-half inches being recorded in three days. The roads in consequence, are in places impassable, and mails will be delayed. Deaths.—Another prominent "Wairoa citizen, Mr George Perkins, has, at the age of 78, passed that bourne from which no traveller returns. Wairoa. Mt Perkins leaves, a widow, a daughter, and two sons to mourn their loss. —Another old Wairoa .settler, Thomas Eden, .familiarly known 0.8 "Yorky," died recently in Napier, at the age of 88. He formerly lived in Wairoa, and subsequently on his farm at Maruniaru. He was pre-deceaeed by his wife, who died a few months ago. Hydrc-Electrio Board.—The calling for nominations for the Electric Power Board fc<r this district shows that our "hydro-electric scheme bids fair to push ahead with satisfactory speed.
