THIRTEEN SPIES EXECUTED.
SIX ESCAPE THE FULL PENALTY. Particulars concerning the number of people sentenced to death in England during the years 1914 to 1918 for treason, espionage, and similar offences against the State, were sought recently by Major Christopher Lowther in the House of Commons. The Home Secretary said that there were 19 death sentences and 13 executions. The nationalities of convicted persons were:— Enemy (or origin) 8 Neutral 8 Allied ... '. 2 British 1 This return did not include cases which arose in connection with the Irish rebellion in 1916. Major Lowther: How many women were sentenced to death last year?—Nine, and in each case the sentence was commuted.
