The stock market during the past week has experienced a slight change, f.at cattle at the. WalLaoetown sale on Tuesday showing an advance on the previous prices of 20s to 80s per head. This is owing to the operations of a local grazier, who secured most of the yarding. As winter advances a fair quantity of unfinished 'stuff is being thrown on the market, and some of that entered as fat has only been of store quality. The store cattle market shows no improvement except in the case of big, forward bullocks. A few people with feed to spare seem inclined to operate in this class. The fat sheep market remains unchanged, very few prime quality coming forward The yarding at the last sale consisted chiefly of light stuff, and anything good met with a ready sale at prices on a par with those previously ruling. The store sheep market shows little improvement, except in stuff suitable for holding over ' for, shearing. A few buyers are inclined to operate in this cla-ss in anticipation of later requirements. E. OSWALD REILLY, Managing Director, ' Moray place, Dunedin. PEKPETUAL • TRUSTEES, ESTATE, aj.nD AGENCY COMPANY. ■The thirty-fifth annual report states that the profit for the year amounts to £3891 18s 6d, which, added to £1517 17s sd, being the amount brought forward from the previous year (£2021 8s 4d), less the sums of lOgns contributed to funds of the o<tago Women's and Children's .Protection Society, £ls to the Sailors' Fund Help for Men of the Mercantile Marine, £lO to Otago's Tribute to France Fund, £25 to the. Red Cross Copper Trail, and incom© tax for year ended 30th April, 1918, £443 Os lid, shows an available balance of £5409 15s lid. Out of this an interim dividend at the rate of 15 per cent, per annum on the paid-up- capital of £12,500 was paid for .the half year ended 31st October, .1918, which absorbed £937. 10s, and the directors now recommend that the balance (£4472 5s lid) be dealt with as follows:—To payment „ of a dividend on paid-up capital, £12,500, at 15 peT cent, per annum for half year ended 30th April, 1919, £937 10s; to reserve fund, £500; to bonus to staff, £3BB 6s 6d; to depreciation, £52 16s 9d; to carry forward to next year (subject to income tax for year just ended), £2593 12s Bd. Messrs John Mill and Edgar C. Hazlett are the retiring directors, and both offer themselves for re-election. Messrs William Brown and Co. and Mr George Blyth, the auditors, a l so retire, but offer themselves for re-election. AMERICAN GOODS. Subsequent to the signing of the armistice, when it was natural to look forward to at least a gradual decline in prices of goods at oversea manufacturing centres American merchants in nearly every report advised that values wonld be maintained at practically war levels, and perhaps even an increase. This persistency on the part of American exporters, as usual, has not been taken" seriously by Melbourne importers (writes the Argus), and in. some lines values have fallen consistently. For example, before the armistice the American quotation for mild steel bars was £2B per ton, c.i.f. and e. In January the price fell to £25, February to £2O, March to £l6 lOs/'aiid for May £l7 2s 6dl is quoted, the last price showing a decline of 40 per cent, on the pre-axmistice figure. Private cable advices from tflie "United States indicate that the present price will be maintained for some time. ENGLISH BUTTER CONTROL. Government control' of butter in the United Kingdom is likely, in'"the opinion of Messrs Mills and Sparrow, of London, to continue for some time to come. In their trade circular received by - the late mail they state that supplies have been exceedingly short, but are now coming to hand from Australia, New Zealand, the Argentine, and America in considerable quantities. The retail price is 2s 6d per lb, and it is probable that a reduction of 2d per lb will be made shortly. The world's supply of butter, they add, is short, owing to decrease in the dairy herds of Dtmmark and Siberia, the cause being lack of foodstuffs, and in the case of Siberia the general disorganisation of the Country. England used to draw very largely from both these countries for her supplies, and the fact that she is not receiving anything at all from those souro&fl explayis her present great shortage. So far nothing has been done with reference to the purchase by the British Government of the Canadian cheese output for the coming season. If Canadian cheese were left free "there would probably be 'panicky markets for a time, owing to the large supplies that will arrive from New Zealand about the same time as the flush of the make is on in Canada, and therefore it is thought that the Government should take the Canadian out-turn and store what is necessary to make an equitable distribution throughout the year." PAPUAN PRODUCTS COMPANY. The eighth annual general meeting of shareholders in the Papuan Products Company was held in Christchurch on Friday (says the Press). Mr G. T. Booth (chairman of the Board of Directors) presided over a poor attendance of members. The annual report and balance sheet were Adopted, on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr W. T. Robinson. Tho chairtnxm, in moving the adoption of the report,

said that it was at last his privilege to congratulate shareholders that the enterprise had reached a stage when.it might be regarded as an established commercial undertaking. It was no longer a matter of reporting merely the number of acres of foxeso cleared and planted. Revenue appeared this year to the extent of £875 for sales of rubber. This was a small beginning, but it indicated that the company had reached a turning point, and unless all indications failed the shareholders might look fco sales of produce to furnish a steadily increasing revenue from year to year. The output of rubber last year was 19,0001 b, some 70001 b in excess of the anticipations. Last year the rubber market was in a depressed and unsettled condition, and the output was soldi to the Commonwealth Government at an average figure which barely reached Is per lb. The embargo was now lifted, and tho rubber was going to London, where it was expected 2s per lb would be obtained. A small production of copra was expected before the end o-f 1919, and a considerable area to bear a light, marketable crop in 1920, and within a few years 1000 acres of cocoanuts should be in profitable bearing. Tne prospects of the company were never brighter than at present. It had been amply demonstrated that natural conditions, soil, and climate were highly favourable, and that the native labour supply was satisfactory, both in quantity and quality. The directors proposed to raise an additional £IO.OOO in shares for the purpose of developing the newly-acquired 2000 acres. The two retiring directors, Messrs W. T. Robinson and A. M. Wright, were re-elected to the board of directors. CUSTOMS RETURNS. The net customs returns for last month amount to £58,972 18s Id, and the beer duty to £7728 18& 6d. The customs returns for May last year were £38,274 2s lOd, and tho beer duty was £7376 3s lOd. NEW PLYMOUTH, May 31. The customs revenue for the month of May was £6BOO, as compared with £SIBO in May, 1918. ■ INVESTMENT STOCKS. June 2. National Bank —Buyers £6 Bs. . Bank of N.Z.. (£3 6s Bd)—Sellers £l4.
