CHRISTCHURCH LICENSING COMMITTEE.

POOR ACCOMMODATION IN SOME HOTELS. CHRISTCHURCH, June 2. At the annual meeting of the Licensing Committee the Health Officer's report recommended certain alterations to the bars and premises of a number of the hotels, some of which, the chairman stated, were beyond the jurisdiction of the committee. The committee adjourned for a fortnight, the chairman stating that all licensees who were lessees must produce a statement showing any encumbrances on their leases. The Chairman stated that the committee had visited many hotels in Christchurch, and in some the accommodation was so bad that the committee was considering the question of condemning certain premises. Complaints had been made to the committee of travellers being refused meals because they asked for them after the scheduled time. The Chairman pointed out that licensees were also innkeepers, and were bound to supply moals at any time of the day or night, and they must also provide accom-

modation for travellers as long as it was available. The penalties for nori-cornplianco with the law were very heavy.
