May 31. —Cold, stormy weather has prevailed during the week. Heavy showers of snow and sleet have fallen at frequent intervals; but the snow did not .lie on the plain. Maungatua is, however, heavily coated, and the air is bitterly cold. Farewell Social.—Despite the inclemency of the weather, the Momona Hall was filled to the doors last Wednesday evening, the occasion being a farewell social to Mr and Mrs Melville, who are leaving the district. Mr A. Amos, chairman of the School Committee, presided. A varied- and interesting programme of vocal and instrumental items was gone through, to which the following ladies and gentlemen contributed:—Mesdames Douglas, J. A. Bruce, Munro, ,and M'Diarmid, Misses .Robinson, Swan, and M'Diarmid,' and Messrs J. A. Bruce, R L. D. Blair, P. Bathgate, Paterson, and Chisholm. The accompaniments were played by Mrs J. A. Bruce, Mrs Munro, and Mr E. Blair. At an interval in the programme Mr Amos, on behalf of the residents of Momona, presented Mr Melville with a gold albert and pendant and Mrs Melville with an ebony-backed mirror and set of brushes.
