BANNOCKBURN.
May 29.—The weather has assumed a very wintry aspect, and snow showers have been general. The surrounding mountain tops are well coated with snow, and some very sharp frosts have been experienced. Welcome-home.—On Friday night, the 23rd inst., a very large assembly of people met together an the Bannockburn Hall to publicly welcome home Lance-corporal E. White, Gunner Scott, and Sapper Lewis, who returned to New Zealand by the troopship Arawa, which arrived on the 14th inst. Mr A. Ritchie occupied the chair, and in a neat speech extended a hearty welcome to the soldiers, and expressed the pleasure of the residents at their safe return. Mr Witheford (Methodist minister) also spoke a few words. Each soldier briefly returned thanks for the hearty welcome they had received. Songs were rendered during the evening, and dancing was indulged in until early morning. Supper was served during an interval. Mrs W.\ Toms and Miss Breen supplied! the music, and Mr E. Toms acted as M.C. Football.—The Bannockburn football team journeyed to Cromwell on Saturday, 24th inst., and there played the first of a series of flag matches against the Cromwell team. The result was a win for Cromwell, the scores being 18 points to 3. The weather was fine, and there was a fair gathering of spectators. Cromwell had a fairly strong side with a number of experienced players, whereas the Bannbckburn team was composed of a majority of young players, who, however, played a good game, and will improve with practice.
