BOARDING-HOUSE FIRE.
Thirty minutes of skilled fire-fighting' endeavour on the part of the City Brigade (with three machines) and the South Dunedin Brigade (with one machine) sufficed to terminate the ravages of a strongly-seated fire at 3.40 a.m. yesterday in an old threestorey brick building, known as the Lyrio Boarding-house, and situated in Maclaggan street, above the entrance to the Arcade. In that short period, however, the whole of the top floor, in the rear of which the fire originated, had been gutted, the second floor damaged by flames, and the ground floor by water. The boarding-house was managed by Alfred Badman, who has been in occupation for only a few weeks. The six or seven boarders made a hurried exit. The source of the outbreak is not known, though its originating point is readilv traceable. A quantity of furniture in the buildinjr, which went with the Jease, belonged to Frewens estate, and was insured for £l5O with the Victoria Company. "It is stated also that some furniture belonging, personally to the tenant, and uninsured, was destroyed. Xn.e building, the property of Hill's trustees, was insured for £BOO, also with the Victoria Company.
