WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council, held on the 30th, was attended by Crs A. S. Orbell (chairman) E. Laky, C. J. M'Leod, and P. Briscoe. inspector's reporto. Iho Inspector submitted the following reports on tho various ridings: Hawksbury Riding.—A portion of tho Mount Watkin road has been surfaced, also a portion of Chisholm's road. A commencem,enLhas been made in carting gravel for the 1< lag Swamp road, and gravel has been carted for Bcthune's ford. Morton Riding.—Twenty-seven vards of rotten rock have been spread on" Pullar'f road and a culvert repaired, 44- yards of rotten rock have been put on M'Gillivray'» road, and water-tables cleaned out on both roads. A slip has been cleared off Kenyon s road. Biueskin Riding.—Eighteen yards of metal have been used in filling up a hollow on the Main road and 22 yards of stone carted for Donald's Hill. Two bridges have been repaired and Clark's road surfaced. Tha metal is being quarried for the WaitatiPort Chalmers road. North-East Valley Riding.—Metal is being quarried and broken to fill some of tho worst holes in Waitati-Wakari road. Tho metalling contract is making fair progress, being about half-finished. It was decided to approve the reports, and procure necessary pipes for tho "WaitatiWakari road. , CORRESPONDENCE. The Receiver of Land Revenue notified the payment to the council of £l7 Is 2d, accrued thirds and fourths.—Received. The Clerk of the Karitano School Committee wrote asking conditions of subsidy on money collected for the entertainment of children during peace celebrations. —It was decided to reply that tho Government would allow a £ for £ .subsidy on such money expended through local bodies. Tho Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote notifying that the amount of levy due by the council for the current year wan £lO6l 16s 9d. The amount last year wai £BBO 17s 6d.—Received. Mr W. C. Arkle (solicitor to the Palmerston Borough Council), under instructions demanded_ from the Waikouaiti Council £2O, proportion of the cost of maintenance of Ronaldsay street, Palmerston, for four years. The claim was made by virtue of a warrant) dated March 14-, 1912, under the hand of the Governor, apportioning tho cost of maintaining this street. —It was decided that the chairman and Cr M'Gill should wait on tho Mayor of Palmerston to point out how unjust this claim was, as the County Council had never carted a load of gravel over Ronaldsay street since the date of the warrant. Mr John Matthews (Kapuka) wrote asking for the deviation of a road near the Merton Station. —The writer to bo informed that, it was the intention of the council to improve the present road. The Secretary of the New Zealand Counties' Association wrote asking the council to nominate delegates for the association'! annual conference, and to forward rernit» for consideration there.—Received. Mr Alexander Ross (Waitati) wrote on behalf of the Waitati Coal Company asking for the repair of two chains of road at tho corner of Messrs Lunan and Clark's properties.—lnspector to report. GENERAL. Accounts amounting to £271 5s 7d were ■ passed for payment. The council agreed to leave the general rate at tire same figure as last year—namely, fd in the £. The formal resolution fixing this will come before next meeting. It was decided to call for fresh tender* for carting 218 yards of metal from Hammond's quarry. The tenders of Mr J. Harris—3s 8d a yard for carting 384 yards of metal from Merton Railway- Strtion and Main road and 3s 5d a yard for carting 650 yards of metal > from railway stations—were accepted.
