DASTARDLY OUTRAGE.
POLICE OFFICIAL'S HOUSE DAMAGED.
GREYMOUTH, May 29. About 2 o'clock this morning the residents of Greymouth were wakened by a terriiio explosion. It proved to be the result of one of the most dastardly deeds recorded in the dominion for many years. A high explosive was placed in the house of Senior Sergeant Simpson, of the Police Force. The bouse resembles a building which had been, bombed. Senior Sergeant Simpson says ho ivaa awakened by an explosion swaying the building and the sound of falling glass. In the "kitchen there was chaos. The walls were shattered and solid shelves were torn out of position, and the windows were blown clean out. Mrs Simpson and their infant were sleeping in a room adjoining. They were saved from the force of the explosion by a cupboard between the kitchen and bedroom wall The charge was evidently placed in tha angle forward of fue kitchen chimney. The high explosive used shattered a bench and sink and splintered the chimney. The charge was fired by a time fuse. A large charge was used. The inmates escaped injury. Mrs Simpson ia suffering from shock.
