CROMWELL.

May 5. —The annual meeting of the Cromwell Horticultural Society was held last week. The report and balance sheet disclosed a very satisfactory state of affairs. The report drew attention to the overcrowded state of -affairs at the last show, and the society is faced with the problem of how to overcome this difficulty, which, of course, is really a blessing in disguise, seeing that it means that the show is very much alive'. The balance sheet showed a credit balance of over £l4. The following were elected a committee for the incoming year: —President, Mr A. M. Brodrick; vice-presidents—Messrs H. Bowie, Jas. Ritchie, jun., and Geo. Moodie;- secretary and treasurer, W. R. Meehaelis; committee —Mesdames Moodie, Rankin, Meehaelis, Middleton, Gibson, Ritchie, Hyde, W. D. Jolly, Brodrick, Miss Bowie, Messrs Gibson, Hatton, Rankin, Swann, Webb, M'Ledowney, L. Jolly, J. Betts, Fache, and K. Varcoe. Golf.—On Saturday the Golf Club held their opening match at the links. There were quite a number of members and visitors who attended, and a very enjoyable day was spent,. though the afternoon's pleasure was marred to an extent by the cold weather that prevailed. Cricket.—The Public Works' cricketers met the Bannockburn cricketers during the Easter holidays, when a very enjoyable game was played, the Public Works winning by 150 runs to 95. Anzac Day.—The day passed off quietly, there being a whole holiday observed by the business people, but no public ceremony was held. In the morning a special service was held in the Presbyterian Church by the Rev. W. P. Rankin, M.A. Peace. —Preparations are now being made for the celebration of peace. All the subcommittees are busily engaged m getting everything in readiness, and it is anticipated that the "residents of Cromwell will long have cause to remember with pleasure and profit the way they celebrated the signing of peace. Back From the War.—Last week quite a. number of returned men were welcomed back to the district, their names being Private T. Johnston, H. Clark, W. Gordon, and Sergeant A. Smithy
