BALCLUTHA.
May s.—The steamer Clyde i 9 at present undergoing repairs to the boiler, and consequently the freight traffic is stopped for about a week. Peace Celebrations. —Arrangements are well in hand for the celebrating of peace news. It was resolved to secure two trucks of ferns from Owaka for street decoration purposes, and tradespeople are to be requested to decorate their premises. Mayoralty.—The election for the mayoral chair was keenly contested. The result was that Mr Bunten defeated the retiring Mayor. Weather. —Winter has set in with a will* and for the past week we have experienced almost intermittent rain and wind. Indications point to a very early and severe winter.
Angling.—The angling season closed on Wednesday. Altogether, it has been a mostdisappointing one. Trout are becoming scarcer every year, and the few that are landed are not comparable in size to those caught a few years ago. This is applicable to all the district streams, but'more especially to the one-time famous Pomahaka.
