It is reported that deer are plentiful in the hilly country running between Mount Somers and Methven, and that the herds have been well culled, so that some good heads will probably bo secured during the season. ' LINWOOD v. UNION. It is about 25 years since the Linwood Club played its first match against the Union Club, on the Caledonian Ground. Home and home matches were continued till the war broke out, but after this lapse the games have been resumed, and the. two teams met oi* thi Garisbrook ground on Saturday, in fine weather, and before a fair attendance. Lirwood did not have a full team, and four of the Merivale team agreed, in a sportsmanlino manner, to play with their fellow townsmen. T!he game was of quite a bright description, despite the fact that neither side, with one or two "exceptions, was in anything like form to stand up to the fast interchanges which took place. It is worthy of mention that a large number of the players in both matches played at Garisbrook were returned soldiers. The game ended: Union, 8 points; Linwood, 3 points. Mr Stracha,n was refeiee. MERIVALE v. ALHAMBRA. The time-honoured match followed immediately after. The old Otago repiesentative, Fred Given, turned out for Alhambxa, and Hay, of Port Chalmers, played for Merivale. The opening play was very ragged. Immediately after the commencement of the second half the amusing discovery was made that to go off. Scores: Merrivale, 11 points; Alliambra, 6 points. Mr Gwynne was referee. SOLDIERS AT PLAY. At Rugby football New Zealand (nil) played Pill Harriers (nil). In the inter-services tournament series England defeated South Africa by 21 to 12. In a Rugby match played at Twicken-. ham New Zealand beat England by 9 points to 3. The New Zealanders' superiority surprised everybody. They mastered the Homo team in every department, and the ball was seldom in the New Zealand half. Their forwards played a magnificent game, repeatedly storming the English line. The King will attend at Twickenham on Saturday and present the cup to the New Zealand Rugby captain after the New Zealand versus France match. BOWLING. EASTER TOURNAMENT. The Easter bowling tournament, which is oonfinedl to rink play, was commenced under the direction of the Dunedin Centre on the Dunedin, Caversham, Caledonian, and NorthEasr Valley Greens on Friday morning. The weather looked promising in the early .part of the morning, but by mid-day there was every indication that rain was not far distant. Competitors in the afternoon struggled on as long as possible, but finally play had to be adjourned for a little more than an hour, by which time the rain was descending; steadily, if not copiously. The usual course was adopted of finding winners and losers by means of a qualifying round; winners passing into the Provincial competition and losers into the City competition. The time limit was two hours and a-half; the number of heads to be played being 21.
Bowlers wore more fortunate on Saturday as regards weather for the Eastar bowling tournament. The day started fine, and kept fine. The greens showed signs of tho previous day's rainfall, and were at no time playing keen, though they materially improved in the afternoon. The same four greens were in usa—namely, Dunedin, Caledonian, Caversham, and North-East Valley. On the Dunedin Green, Hendry became green winner in the Provincial Sinks, and Rattray and Gal© tied with four wins each in the City Rinks. On the North-East Valley Green, the green winner in the Provincial Rinks proved to bo Hutchison, who came through with five wins to his credit, while Forrester and Smcaton each suffered one loss in the City Rinks, and have to meet to decide who shall be the winner on this green. On the Caversha7ii Green tho N.E. Valley rink skipped by Tonkin were the green winners in the Provincial Rinks. In tho City Rinks, Henaghan's rink, with four wins and one loss ; was the green winner. On the Caledonian Green Hawkey, Grey, and Strang tied, and have to play off to find the green winners in the Provincial Rinks contest. Anderson was the green winner in the City Rinks.
The heavy rain which set in on Sunday and continued next day rendered play on Monday out of the question. Play was continued on Tuesday on the Dunedin Green in _ somewhat unpleasant weather. The following ar© the semi-finals: Provincial Rinks.—Strang (Invercargill) 17, Hendry (Caledonian) 15; Tonkin (N.E. Valley) 28, Hutchison (N.E. Valley) 19.
City Rinks. —Henaghan (Caledonian) 26, Anderson (Fairfield) 9; Smeaton (St. Kilda) 22, Gale (Kaituna) 20. OAMARU TOURNEY. (From Ouh Own Correspondent.) OAMARU, April 18. The annual Easter bowling tournament, under the auspices of the two local clubs, was opened to-day. The weather in the morning was dull, but it turned out beautifully fine, with a good south-west breeze. All the greens had apparently recovered from I the effects % the heavy rain of a few days ■ ago, and played well. The programme was somewhat different from those of former years, being reduced to two matches, each ' for rinks and pairs, with a qualifying round as a preparation. The rinks were taken today, and good progress was made. April 19. The bowling tournament was continued to-day under the most favourable conditions, 'i the weather being perfect, and the three | greens in excellent order. The pairs matches were taken, commencing with the , qualifying round with 96 pairs engaged, and ; thereafter carrying the two matches to a i forward point. j April 21.
