EDUCATION BOARD
The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board was held on the Bth; present — •Messrs J. Wallace (chairman), J. Horn, J. Slmith, G. Livingstone, R. H. Todd, W. R. Brugh, J. H. Wilkinson, P. M'Kinlay, and the Hon. D. T. Fleming. The following, among other business, was transacted :
The Chairman made feeling reference to the death of Dr Don, one of the board's inspectors. It was decided to write a letter conveying the sympathy of the board to the relatives of the late Mr J. E. Stephens, for many years teacher at Clyde. The board also expressed sympathy with Mr J. Horn in the death of his father. The Duntroon Committee asked for half the cost of necessary asphalting work.— Granted.
The Musselburgh Committee applied for assistance in the erection of a monument to the memory of ex-pupils.—Decided to send the lequest to the department and ask it to make a grant. A request from the Taieri Beach Committee for window blinds for the school and residence, repairs to windows and outbuildings, and the clearing of scrub around tho school was referred to tho architect for a report. The Kelso Committee forwarded a recommendation that the garden should be discontinued unless a new site was provided to the satisfaction of the commitete, and the fixing and repairing of the ground done at the board's expense.—lt was decided that the portion of ground where the residence formerly stood should be put in order, and that an estimate of the cost of a new site for the garden should be asked from the committee.
The Wairuna Committee applied for a site on the school ground 'for a soldiers' memorial. —It was decided to give a lease of the ground at a nominal rental for the purpose. Permission to let tho school residence at Cambrains was granted.
A request from the Lawrence-Committee that provision should be made for a commercial course in the secondary department, to include typewriting, shorthand, and bookkeeping, was referred to the senior inspector for a report. The following recommendations of the architect were approved : —Extension of three rooms at Kelso residence; improvements to ventilation at Macandrow Road; repairs to outbuildings and asphalting at Lovell's Flat, provided 'the committee contributes £lO from local funds; erection of concrete tank at Awamangu. The application of- the Naseby Committee for the painting of fences at the school and residence was declined. Master John Harris wrote intimating that a* he has won the Harrop scholarship, he declined the Junior National Scholarship won by him. SECOND DAY. The monthly meeting of the Otago Education Board was continued on Wednesday. M'Leod, second assistant, Waikouaiti; George H. Beilby, third assistant, Green Island; Alice Greaves, fourth assistant, Normal; Jane M'Caughern, sixth assistant, Kaitangata; Agnes S. Williamson, sixth assistant, Port Chalmers; Ivy A. Learmonth, secondary assistant, Tapanui District High; Jean L. Crawley, junior kindergarten assistant, Normal; Leith Bagley, mistress, Outram. It was reported that there were 91 relieving teachers in the board's service and 11 teachers on leave.
A petition was received from residents of Sweet Water Creek asking for assistance in getting a bridge placed over the river at Pounawe-a, or else having a small school erected at Sweet Water Creek. There wera 14. children who had at present to attend school by boat. —The matter was referred to a committee consisting of -the chairman and the members for the district (the Hon. Mr Fleming and Mr M'Kinlay)." The architect was granted authority to get improvements to the heating system of the Kaitangata School carried out. Mr Livingstone complained of the lack of shelter sheds in many of the country districts, and, at his instance, the architect was instructed to report on the erection of sheds at Windsor and Elderslio, and to take into special account the advisability of making the buildings also available for fresh air schools. •
■lt was reported that owing to decrease in attendance the High Street School would lose one assistant. Increased attendance at Anderson's Bay entitled the school to a new assistant at from £l4O to £l5O. '• ' Mr J. B. Grant, head master at Ravensbourne, forwarded to the board the reply of tha Minister of Education to his letter regarding the board's method of appointing teachers.—The letter was received.
Mr Horn gave notice that he would brinjy forward the following resolution at the next meeting:—"That the governors of the Technical School bo asked to appoint a committee of three to confer with a like number from the Education Board, and report to both bodies with a view to 9,xving the cost to both institutions by the overlapping of the same subjects, both in the School of Arts and tho Technical School."
