WAIKAIA.

January 20.—During the past week heavy rain has fallen almost daily, with snow on the high country. In consequence the shearing has been greatly delayed, and many sheep have died.

Angling.—Sorne fine baskets of trout, ranging from ljlb to slb, have been caught in the river.

Surprise Party.—On the 15th a large party travelled by motor to visit Mr and Mrs R. Mackay, who were recently married. Music and dancing were indulged in, and during the course of the evening Mr Milne, in a congratulatory speech, presented Mr and Mrs Mackay with a sea grass armchair as a token of the esteem of their many friends. Mr Mackay suitably replied. The ladies present brought baskets, and an enjoyable evening terminated with the singing of "Auld lang syne."
