AIDING A DESERTER.
HEAVY FINES IMPOSED. AUCKLAND, June 6. Charges arising out of the escape from military custody in February last of George Caffery, and his subsequent capture in a, house in Auckland, were heard at the police court to-day, when Esther Hutland and Julia (alias Mary Dickson) M'lvor were charged with a breach of the War Regulations in having withheld information as to Caffery's whereabouts from the police. Caffery was an absentee from camp, and was arrested by the police on February 2. He twice escaped from custody, and finally waa arrested at Newcastle. Evidence showed that the accused asserted that Cafl'ery'a nam? was Brown, and on the occasion of hia arrest stated that he was not there, whereas Caffery was discovered hiding in a chimney. Accused first pleaded not guilty, but on the police withdrawing other charges of being disorderly and idle persons pleaded guilty. Each was fined £IOO.
